As a first year Apprentice Fitter and Machinist you will join the Instrument Manufacturing Laboratory at Marsfield, NSW.  This laboratory develops and manufactures state of the art instrumentation for CSIRO’s radio astronomy facilities across Australia, and also for other radio astronomy facilities within Australia and overseas.

 

You will complete a four-year apprenticeship in Fitting and Machining.
Over the course of the apprenticeship, you will undertake on-the-job training and complete a nationally recognised qualification by attending day release training at a nominated TAFE college. As part of your on-the-job training, you will gain experience working in a well-equipped workshop with senior trades people that take pride in their contribution to scientific research. 

Your duties will include:

  • Manufacturing and assembling of components to specified tolerances and high standards to support research projects and existing radio astronomy facilities. 
  • Completing Certificate III in Engineering (Fitting and Machining) at TAFE college.
  • Completing practical work-based training using a variety of workshop equipment including manual machine tools and state of the art CNC machining centres, along with CAD/CAM software.
  • Developing skills in interpreting and working from engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Communicating effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues within the team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
  • Adapting techniques, procedures, equipment, concepts and ideas in support of existing and further research.
  • Adhering to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
  • Other duties as directed.

 

Location: Marsfield, NSW

Salary: AU$29,202 (1st year starting salary) up to AU$52,563 (4th year of apprenticeship), plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential

  • Completion of year 12 education. 
  • Interest in engineering/manufacturing and a motivation and willingness to pursue a career in fitting and machining. 
  • Capacity to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks under the direction of Senior Technical Staff.
  • Ability and willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.

 

Desirable

  • Evidence of an interest in design/ manufacturing (i.e. project pieces and/or photos).
  • Completion of any technical or trade related subjects/training.
