Job Description

We seek a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer with a strong background in generative AI, deep learning, statistics and high-performance computing to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing and implementing large language models (LLMs) and machine learning algorithms in high-performance computing environments. This role involves working closely with our research and development team to design, train, and deploy scalable AI solutions that enhance science relevant to the Department of Energy.

In this role you can expect to:

  • Develop and optimize generative AI models, including pretraining and fine-tuning large language models with billions of parameters, for various robotics and autonomous systems applications.
  • Design and implement distributed model training frameworks on large high-performance computing (HPC) systems to support training billion+ parameter models on terabyte-scale datasets.
  • Innovate in reinforcement learning, specifically in developing novel techniques for skill generation in robotics that significantly reduce the need for extensive data rollouts.
  • Utilize multimodal large language models to improve robotic navigation for unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), incorporating black box and fine-tuned open-source models.
  • Engage in research to reduce latency and enhance the efficiency of AI architectures, specifically focusing on IO-aware modifications and optimizing the quadratic self-attention computation in transformer models.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI models into business products, ensuring these innovations drive value and provide competitive advantages.
  • Mentor junior engineers and research interns, fostering a culture of learning and innovation within the team.

Position Requirements

  • MS in Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field, strongly emphasizing deep learning, large language models, and machine learning.
  • Experience with Python, PyTorch, Git, Bash, XGBoost, and Huggingface.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building, training, and deploying machine learning models, particularly in robotics and autonomous systems.
  • Experience with distributed computing and experience with large HPC systems.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and translate findings into practical applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows:

  • RD1: Bachelors and 0+ years, Masters and 0+ years, or equivalent
  • RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years, Masters and 3+ years, or a PhD, or equivalent
