Job Description

The Argonne Environmental Safety and Health Division is hiring a Battalion Chief for the Argonne Fire Department. Responsibilities include leadership of an assigned shift, whose duties include fire suppression, rescue and prevention activities, and emergency and non-emergency operations. Responsible for the effective supervision, management and coordination of emergency scene operations; oversees emergency response, and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue. Ensures prompt provision of emergency medical care to ill or injured persons, provides mentoring, and assists employees with professional development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assesses the incident scene, develops a plan of action and identifies appropriate strategies and tactics.
  • Determines the need for additional equipment or staffing; ensures security and integrity of emergency scene.
  • Ensures utilization of Incident Management System.
  • Oversees fire prevention, rescue, and fire suppression.
  • Supervises and assists in the reception and transmission of required information by monitoring radio traffic.
  • Creates plans of potential target hazards or special operations for pre-incident purposes.
  • Responsible for the effective supervision and administration of battalion staff including conducting training, prioritizing and assigning work, performance management, employee relations, and related activities.
  • Responsible and accountable for overseeing the daily operations and management of the battalion.
  • Implements, interprets, and ensures compliance of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Establishes goals and objectives.
  • Develops and implements programs in an assigned battalion.
  • Oversees and monitors apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Schedules and coordinates the maintenance of apparatus.
  • Responsible for overall management of fire station buildings and work orders within the assigned Battalion.

Position Requirements

  • Must be a Licensed Illinois State Paramedic/NREMT-P and Certified Fire Officer I or Company Fire Officer as established by the Illinois State Fire Marshal`s Office at the time of hire; and possess NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
  • Skills in human relations, personnel management, and labor relations.

  • Must be able to meet the medical requirements established by the Department of Energy for the position. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all HSPD-12 badging requirements.
  • Bachelor’s and 6+ years or a Master’s and 4+ years, or equivalent
  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's in Fire or Emergency Services related field
  • Fire Officer II or Advanced Fire Officer certification
  • Hazardous Materials Technician certification
  • Confined Space Operations certification
  • NIMS 300 and 400 certification
