Job Description

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division is seeking a Research Scientist to provide technical expertise to Division programs in areas related to development and management of new projects in the area of nuclear safety, internal threat mitigation, incorporation of lessons learned from occupation of a Ukraine NPP, educational programs in nuclear engineering focused on International students, student exchange programs, and the safety analyses of dry spent fuel storage systems, including centralized and on-site. A successful candidate will act as technical project lead and sponsor liaison for communicating project requirements to the recipient countries/entities. The selected candidate will be responsible for organizing, conducting, facilitating, and coordinating technical meetings with foreign collaborating organizations, and coordinating Scope of Work with foreign collaborators.

The applicant will be responsible for:

  • Oversee planning and implementation of collaborative projects in developing training modules and training methodology for in-class and web-based teaching of nuclear engineering principles.

  • Work with sponsors and collaborating organizations to develop project scope and objectives, including technical aspects.

  • Assist in the development of training materials and perform technical reviews of training materials prepared by collaborating organizations.

  • Organize and conduct seminars and international training workshops as directed by DOE.

  • Direct the execution of programs aiding foreign universities through application of coursework enhancements through partnerships with US universities, instructional workshops, and implementation of virtual laboratory environments to enhance the educational capabilities of these universities.

  • Identify and collaborate with other technical subject matter experts.

  • Assist with safety analysis projects related to management of spent nuclear fuel, including centralized and on-site storage facilities, and managing radwastes.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and the Laboratory community through research reports, project presentations, and other regular channels.

  • Document results in the form of monthly reports, progress reports to sponsors, and technical publications and presentations; prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, attend and make presentations at scientific meetings.

  • Develop new ideas, concepts, and/or research proposals to contribute to programmatic growth.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of nuclear engineering principles, theories, and practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the technical Ukrainian language with knowledge of nuclear power terminology.

  • Managing International multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional programs

  • Planning, organizing, and conducting international meetings, seminars, training sessions, including Web-based.

  • Managing projects and understanding international export control issues.

  • Mentoring students at US and International academic facilities

  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral, and written communication.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Other requirements:

  • Knowledge of foreign protocol.

  • Bachelor’s and 8+ years, or Masters and 6+ years, or Doctorate and 4+ years’ experience.
