What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Laboratory Support Technologist to join our team in advancing materials research. In this role, you will participate in the execution of physical experiments utilizing gas guns and pulsed power drivers, providing essential support to our scientists and engineers. Your responsibilities will include assisting with research operations such as test setup, execution, and turnaround, as well as building, modifying, repairing, and maintaining a diverse range of laboratory apparatus and equipment. You will also be tasked with troubleshooting and maintaining high voltage, pulsed power, and power electronics hardware. A strong commitment to maintaining lab safety practices and capabilities is essential, as you will collaborate with key suppliers to support our engineering and scientific processes.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Apply your understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures to assist in the design and execution of experiments.
  • Utilize your skills and knowledge in areas such as physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science, lasers, optics, engineering, radiation, microelectronics, and semiconductors to contribute to research initiatives.
  • Employ analytical and computer skills to analyze data and troubleshoot experimental setups.
  • Interface laboratory equipment with data acquisition systems to ensure accurate data collection and analysis.
  • Utilize instrumentation effectively to measure and observe physical phenomena and effects, enhancing the quality of research outcomes.
  • Develop expert knowledge of laboratory equipment and processes, enabling you to make necessary adjustments and recognize equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Conceptualize and communicate key elements of experimental design and results, effectively representing scientific and engineering principles to staff, management, and visitors.
  • Conduct research, investigate anomalies, explore alternative solutions, and recommend effective solutions to complex problems.
  • Work independently with minimal guidance while also collaborating as part of a team to achieve research objectives.
  • Write clear and concise operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory protocols to ensure consistency and safety in laboratory operations.

Due to the nature of the work, this candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$72,800 - $140,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus five (5) or more years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining high voltage and/or a wide variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • A relevant associates or bachelors degree
  • Experience in the execution of material physics experiments.
  • Demonstrated ability to support research operations including test setup, execution, and turn around.
  • Experience with pulsed power and power electronics hardware.
  • Experience with lab safety practices to support engineering and scientific processes and working with suppliers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the development and delivery of work plans, maintenance schedules, presentations, proposals, and reports.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently in a dynamic work environment while maintaining professional work behaviors.
  • Active DOE L or Q clearance

About Our Team:

Department 1647 is responsible for measuring material properties at low to medium pressures (1-1000 kbar) using a wide array of capabilities. Department 1647 staff perform research on the STAR gas gun facility, the Saturn and Z pulsed power facilities, and the Nevada Test Site. Areas of interest range from fragmentation, properties of porous, energetic, nuclear, and advanced materials, National Missile Defense, and seismic measurements in the emerging threat arena. This department works collaboratively with the Shock and Z-Pinch Physics Department 1646, as well as with many other groups at Sandia and in the Department of Defense.
