Job Description

The Research Scientist will conduct research, operating and maintaining the NeXUS equipment, with responsibility for the Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) end station and beamline. This system includes capabilities for ARPES analysis, photoemission microscopy, time-resolved photoemission measurements, and pulsed extreme ultraviolet (XUV) emission experiments. The Research Scientist will support user research and conduct independent research.

NSF NeXUS is a state-of-the-art user facility dedicated to studying material and molecular dynamics using ultrafast optical pulses (infrared to XUV/soft X-rays) and a variety of measurement instrumentation. The NeXUS facility includes three beamlines, with tailored ultrafast light in each, and multiple end stations supporting distinct analysis approaches. NeXUS is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted at The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio, USA). Learn more about NeXUS, https://nsf-nexus.osu.edu/

The Research Scientist will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and advancement of the ARPES end station. The ARPES end station is a commercial electron spectrometer purchased within the last five years. It has been customized to suit the needs of time-resolved optical experiments. Strong candidates will have expert knowledge of the underlying physical principles of photoelectron/photoemission analysis of solids. The Research Scientist will be responsible for the operation and advancement of the ARPES beamline, and they will receive the necessary support and training in XUV generation to operate this system.

The Research Scientist will:
• support NeXUS users in planning and conducting ARPES experiments using the NeXUS Facility
• maintain expert knowledge and skills that are on the forefront of photoelectron analysis of solids, covering both the technological aspects and the materials science it supports
• complete experiments, hardware development, and/or software development that advance related scientific fields and benefit capabilities at NeXUS
• work with the NeXUS staff to establish effective and efficient processes to operate and maintain NeXUS equipment, focused on the ARPES systems
• cross train on other NeXUS equipment such as the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), photoelectron gas analyzer, or others
• conduct scientific or engineering research by proposing, executing, and publishing scientific results and technology development

Requirements:
• Ph.D. in experimental physics, materials science/engineering, chemistry, or optical engineering
• Three years of demonstrated experience in either (1) operation and maintenance of a photoelectron analysis system comparable to the NeXUS ARPES end station or (2) design or assembly of custom equipment employing optical and high vacuum technologies for materials analysis. (Can include work towards Ph.D.)
• Strong evidence of scholarship and independent scientific achievement in their field of expertise, such as a track record of peer-reviewed publications.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
