Laboratory Supervision & Maintenance

Oversee daily operations of the biogeochemistry laboratory.

Maintain functionality of field and laboratory equipment.

Coordinate shipping/receiving of samples and supplies.

Develop and implement quality control and assurance protocols.

Train and mentor technicians, undergraduates, graduate students, and visiting scientists in lab safety, procedures, and instrument operation.

Maintain chemical inventory, MSDS records, algae cultures, and order supplies as needed.

Instrumentation & Data Analysis

Operate and maintain instruments such as spectrophotometers, mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs, nutrient autoanalyzers, and other lab equipment.

Organize, execute, and document sampling of plants, animals, gases, water, and sediment.

Process samples, analyze data using statistical methods, and refine methods/protocols based on findings.

Research Collaboration

Work with faculty, post-docs, visiting scientists, and graduate students to design and conduct laboratory and field experiments.

Assist with experimental design, protocol development, sample collection, processing, and analysis.

Travel daily to research sites and collaborator laboratories as needed.

Data Management

Generate, manage, and maintain accurate data collection, entry, storage, and analysis systems.

Research & Extension Support

Contribute to project design, literature reviews, and manuscript preparation.

Assist with extension activities, including preparation of educational materials.

Mentor temporary lab members and perform other related duties as required.

Expected Salary:
$46,000.00 annually commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.



Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, marine science, environmental science or related field and professional experience with relevant skills;
A general understanding of sediment biogeochemical processes.
Applicants with field experience, particularly in coastal and estuarine settings, and experience with analytical chemistry are preferred.
Experience in quantitative chemical analysis of nutrients and inorganic substances in water, sediment, gas and biological tissue; operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments including mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, elemental analyzer, nutrient autoanalyzer.
A valid driver’s license and ability to drive and operate a boat.
Proficiency in basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as R.
Expressed potential and motivation to participate in intellectual and professional development in research and extension activities related to coastal resilience;
Proficiency in organization and communication skills
