Job Summary

HMS MEDscience's mission is to inspire and empower a rising generation of scientists. The MEDscience model combines realistic simulated medical emergencies, built around an interactive lifelike mannequin, with hands-on training in a range of STEM disciplines (clinical skills, laboratory and forensic sciences, and biomedical engineering). MEDscience engages over 4,000 students annually (primarily high school) through schoolyear and summer programming and is one of the largest out-of-school collaborators with the Boston Public Schools. MEDscience students learn to think critically, problem solve, and work collaboratively, while gaining exposure to a wide range of career paths in healthcare and the life sciences. MEDscience has grown rapidly in recent years and has recently gone through a comprehensive strategic planning process to develop a roadmap for the next phase of the organization's growth.

A key aspect of the strategic plan is to grow and evolve three strategic initiatives:
1) MEDscience's collaboration with the Museum of Science;
2) our life sciences workforce development program, and ;
3) our MEDscienceTECH biomedical engineering program.
These are complex initiatives that require significant cross-sector collaboration and that have the potential to generate significant new revenue and avenues for growth for MEDscience.

Position Description

MEDscience is seeking to hire an Assistant Director-level staff member to contribute to these new initiatives, with a focus on generating new revenue streams and strengthening MEDscience's connections with key stakeholders (within Harvard and outside the university) in ways that align with the organization's strategic goals. This role will serve as a key advisor to MEDscience's Executive Director and work closely with the Executive Director on all areas of development. They will also work closely with the senior staff members who are responsible for programmatic execution to understand the resources required to run and grow MEDscience's programs and to unlock potential opportunities for new revenue and strategic collaborations. The Assistant Director will also collaborate closely with the HMS Alumni Affairs and Development Office on due diligence, policies, and processes. The ideal candidate for this position will bring experience in fundraising, marketing/communications, prospect/donor database management, and working across multiple sectors and settings, with a demonstrated record of success at growing programs and fostering strategic collaborations.

Development: works directly with Executive Director and senior department leadership to generate new philanthropic revenue tied to organization's multi-year strategic plan and priority initiatives. Works closely with Executive Director to develop and implement major gift strategy and to cultivate major donors, including identifying new prospects with major giving potential.

Strategic Collaborations & External Engagement: develops strategy and tactics for engaging key stakeholders who can contribute to the success of new initiatives. Advises and executes on opportunities to engage the broader Harvard community and new outside collaborators. Works closely with Executive Director and senior leadership to hone MEDscience's messaging and enhance brand awareness in ways that align with and advance strategic priorities.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
• Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Demonstrated success at fundraising, marketing, building complex cross-sector collaborations.
• Experience providing strategic guidance and developing thoughtful recommendations to executive leadership.
• Excellent communicator and writer, with demonstrated ability to connect with a wide range of audiences.
• Understanding of Massachusetts' higher education, health care, and philanthropic landscape is a plus.
• Advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus, but not required.

Working Conditions

• This is a hybrid position, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule.
• This role will require occasional local travel for fundraising events and meetings with donors, prospects, and potential partners.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
