Job Description

Will work in a laboratory environment with elementary, middle school and high school students, grades kindergarten through twelve. The school counselor will provide counseling and guidance services to students. Contract length is 204 days per academic year.

The Burris Laboratory School welcomes applications for a School Counselor.  

Job Function:

Will work in a laboratory environment with elementary, middle school and high school students, grades kindergarten through twelve. The school counselor will provide counseling and guidance services to students. Contract length is 204 days per academic year.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university by date of appointment.

Preferred Education:

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university in education, counseling, or related field of study by date of employment.

Minimum Experience:

Experience working in student advising and/or counseling position. May be as internship.

Preferred Experience:

One year of experience as a school counselor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the administrators, faculty and staff to facilitate student success.
  • Work with students from special populations; i.e., special educations, at-risk, or gifted and talented.
  • Attend case conferences and 504 evaluations for grades K-12.
  • Work with university students and supervisors to provide field experiences.
  • Oversee the reporting regarding child abuse, provide prevention services and serve on the crisis management team.
  • Complete state reports related to the position.
  • Work with students to establish academic schedules to develop and maintain academic plans appropriate to their education goals.
  • Provide support to the test coordinator regarding all state required exams.
  • Provide support regarding the preparation of financial aid forms and applications to colleges.
  • Serve as a liaison between Burris and various community support agencies.
  • Facilitate staffing of university students and pair with Burris students experiencing academic, social and emotional problems.
  • Meet with new Burris families to discuss scheduling, general Burris information. Provide tours to new families who were unable to attend orientation. Report before school year begins to prepare new student schedules.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate guidance program services including case management.
