The Associate Vice President of Public Relations and Communication provides effective leadership in fulfilling the mission of the college as it relates to communication and media relations initiatives, as well as major college-wide and community events. The incumbent assists the Vice President of Strategic Communication and Marketing in the creation and implementation of strategic, internal, local, state, and national communication and public relations campaigns designed to build and strengthen the College’s role and reputation as a leader and authoritative voice in its field.
Minimum Education:
- Master’s degree required.
Minimum Experience/Training:
- 10 years of public relations or media experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Essential Functions:
- Develops and implements all strategic public relations campaigns and external communications efforts to support the organization's mission, goals and objectives.
- Supports the Vice President of Strategic Communication and Marketing with strategic direction for internal communication related to the Office of the President.
- Builds and fosters collaborative relationships with other departments within the organization to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, programs, and grants, etc.
- Manages and maintains the Public Relations requests from across the college for inclusion into plans, across all channels.
- Develops and implements all pre-event and post-event communication activities to support public relations events. External: Specific responsibilities include establishing a production timetable, reviewing news materials, responding to media inquiries, distributing materials to media before, during, and after the event, encouraging media participation, promoting spokespeople, and arranging media interviews. Internal: Specific responsibilities include developing copy for scripts, brochures or booklets and flyers for college-wide institutional events.
- Serves as Public Information Officer in a rapid-response team should the need arise. Supports the Emergency Management team prepare for a crisis through developing and updating the annual crisis communication plan, participation in the twice-yearly BC ALERT college-wide testing, mock scenarios, institutional crisis management training, and distribution of college-wide advisory emails.
- Responds to media requests for information and facilitates media interviews with spokespeople, authors, and others.
- Writes, edits, and oversees news releases, news materials, the President’s Update newsletter, op-eds by executives and external partners, fact sheets, video scripts and talking points, blogs, some webpage copy, and social media content for the Office of the President. Manages and promotes the subject matter expert programs.
- Builds relationships with counterparts in community economic development and non-profit service organizations through external-facing initiatives and jointly sponsored communication campaigns and programs.
- Provides leadership and oversight for special institutional events, as identified by the Office of the President, including supervision of the Director of Institutional Events.

- Ability to forecast and manage budgets and other resource requirements for area of responsibility
- Ability to partner with others across the College and externally develops strategies and plans to exchange information, collaborate on projects, share resources, etc.
- Ability to influence others of the benefits/importance of an idea or plan of action and to gain their support or commitment
