What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Summer - Technical Undergraduate Intern to join our dynamic team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified laboratory components or assemblies
  • Develop, build, modify, repair, maintain, align, evaluate, operate, and experiment with a wide variety of mechanical/optical/laser apparatus and equipment
  • Set up and test complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions
  • Analyze data and recommend modifications to components or test procedures to meet desired specifications
  • Set up instrumentation, data acquisition, and imaging systems to collect data on high-consequence events
  • Maintain and repair the laboratory, equipment, and instrumentation
  • Process data and assist in writing technical reports
  • Train to operate heavy equipment
  • Work independently and as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Pursuing a STEM degree from an accreditied university
  • Team orientated
  • Eager to work outdoors
  • Experience with or ability to learn Solidworks, Matlab, Python, Microsoft Tools
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to evolving department needs by acquiring new knowledge and skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment
  • Familiarity with photography, image processing, and data reduction
  • Positive and enthusiastic outlook for National Security Missions and high consequence field testing.
  • Ability to assemble and design electrical, mechanical, and optical systems
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a clearance

About Our Team:

The Explosive Applications Lab team specializes in the design of energetic devices, experimental validation of energetic device performance, interior and terminal ballistic effects, and high-power laser effects research. We develop a variety of explosive-based solutions focusing on shaped charge design, explosive welding, internal/terminal ballistics, as well as miniaturization and optimization of explosive systems for novel applications.

The Explosive Research and Development department specializes in the design, development, and characterization of explosive systems through the design of energetic devices, experimental validation of energetic device performance, aerosol dispersal sciences, and high channel data acquisitions.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
