Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University School of Nursing (GWNursing) drives innovation and improvements in healthcare worldwide through the education of compassionate nurses, esteemed educators and researchers, entrepreneurial leaders, and influential policy experts.

GW Nursing is searching for a Senior Academic Advisor, School of Nursing who will serve as a member of the Office of Student Services. This position reports to and assists the Director of Student Services in coordinating student retention efforts and initiatives including but not limited to the following: Disability Support Services, Peer Tutoring, Career Services. Additionally, this position provides integral academic support and facilitates needs assessment. Through individual appointments and group advising sessions, this position will assist students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing achievable academic plans. The senior academic advisor also takes part in and supports the School of Nursing events such as new student orientation, graduation celebration, university commencement, white coat ceremony, pinning ceremony, etc.


Specific duties for the School of Nursing include:

Advises students on their academic plans, progression, and career goals as well as assisting them with course registration/drop, withdrawal, program of study planning, leave of absence/continuous enrollment, request for policy exceptions, grade change petitions, etc.
Assists in the ongoing implementation of the student success resource hub that combines academic advising, student programming, and university resources as a one-stop shop to help students succeed.
Manages the student audit sheets and ensures that the academic advising database is regularly updated.
Works closely with other academic advisors in the administration of student services-related processes such as student academic progression tracking, records, registration audits, academic standing reporting, transfer of credits processing, level change processing, graduation clearances, etc.
Tracks student retention and progression and collaborates with the administration to explore student success and retention initiatives, assists in data collection and analysis for decision-making, and further retention and graduation efforts.
Reviews, prepares, and maintains accurate and comprehensive student files for academic progress, success, and retention and ensures deadlines are met for completing various coursework requirements, graduation requirements, and other specific program requirements.
Advises faculty on how to facilitate and improve services to students, including faculty-student mentorship, academic success coaching, career connections, etc.
Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies, and program procedures and guidelines as well as effective and timely referrals to other college and external support services.
Identifies options for students to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations and assists students in completion.
Serves on University Committees as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
Earned Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, educational psychology, school counseling, counseling, or related field preferred
2+ years of relevant work experience is preferred
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and student learning/development theories applied to practice
Experience working with students in a college or university setting
Computer literacy and strong skills with computer applications
Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects
Ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (Microsoft Office, Student Information Systems, Degree Audits, Online Resources, and Support)
Experience working with a diverse student population
