Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The College of Science and Engineering at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for a Maritime Cybersecurity Specialist. This is a time-limited benefits-earning appointment for the date of hire through June 30, 2025, with the opportunity for renewal through June 30, 2027, contingent on available funding.

This role focuses on the intersection of maritime cybersecurity and technology management, emphasizing technology roadmapping, innovation, and strategic planning. The successful candidate will oversee a comprehensive technology roadmapping study involving stakeholder meetings, data collection, analysis, and the production of academic papers. Additionally, the specialist will work closely with master’s and undergraduate students and teach a related course.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Masters degree or Bachelors degree with 0-2 years experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a case by case basis.
Demonstrated expertise in technology roadmapping, innovation, and strategic planning.
Proven track record of producing high-quality research and academic publications.
Experience teaching at the university level and mentoring students.
Excellent analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
Proficiency in data analysis software such as Tableau, SPSS, STATA, SAS, R, or Python.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Ph.D. in Technology Management, Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Marine Engineering, Economics, or a related field.
Strong background in cybersecurity, particularly in maritime applications.
Experience in technology forecasting, multi-criteria decision-making, and operation research.
Knowledge of social network analysis and text mining/analytics.
Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
An interdisciplinary team of UNCW faculty has established the research hub: Maritime Cybersecurity Applied Research, Technology, and Education Center (MCARTEC).

Led by Professor Ulku Clark, the team includes faculty from multiple departments across the university and enjoys the full support of the Cameron School of Business and the College of Science and Engineering.

The overarching purpose of MCARTEC is to help secure and strengthen the resilience of the maritime subsector of the transportation systems sector. The MCARTEC research hub is operated by the Department of Computer Science in the College of Science and Engineering.

The Department of Computer Science offers the following degree programs:

Interdisciplinary B.S. in Intelligent Systems Engineering
Interdisciplinary B.S in Information Technology
Interdisciplinary B.A. in Digital Arts

The Computer Science Department currently has twenty-one full-time faculty members (http://uncw.edu/csc).
College/School Information
The College of Science and Engineering offers a variety of programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as Doctor of Philosophy degrees in applied coastal and ocean sciences; pharmaceutical chemistry; integrative, comparative, and marine biology; and psychology degrees. The college also offers combined bachelor’s/master’s degree programs in information technology/computer science and information systems, computer science/computer science and information systems, and B.S. in mathematics/M.S. in mathematics. To implement its academic programs, the college provides instruction and research opportunities in the natural and behavioral sciences, information technology, data science, computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, and engineering. The eight academic departments in the college provide courses of study in each of these areas, in addition to interdepartmental programs in information technology, cybersecurity, and digital arts. A 2+2 in engineering; and 3+2 programs in computer science and electrical or computer engineering; and physics and electrical engineering, are also offered in the college. Post-baccalaureate certificate programs in environmental studies, applied statistics, and geographic information science are also available.

CSE students work with distinguished faculty and scientists, use cutting edge technology, and conduct impactful research. Faculty-directed research projects empower CSE students to apply what they learn inside the classroom and laboratory to real-world situations and prepares them for a variety of careers or advanced study.
