Job Description
Serve as one of three professional academic advisors to all Honors College students (matriculates, transfer, and upper division students) in academic program planning, course scheduling, and other academic activities; participate in summer orientation and summer advising; support the Dean of the Honors College in providing services to Honors students; collaborate with University College’s Office of Academic Advising in understanding and interpreting curriculum requirements.
The Honors College seeks an enthusiastic and engaging professional to help advise honors students and contribute to the student success efforts of the college. The successful applicant will join a team of Honors College advisors and student success staff who focus on providing honors students with a high quality experience that enables them to fulfill their academic and life goals.
Job Function:
Serve as one of three professional academic advisors to all Honors College students (matriculates, transfer, and upper division students) in academic program planning, course scheduling, and other academic activities; participate in summer orientation and summer advising; support the Dean of the Honors College in providing services to Honors students; collaborate with University College’s Office of Academic Advising in understanding and interpreting curriculum requirements.
Minimum Education:
Undergraduate degree requirements from an accredited college or university completed at time of appointment.
Preferred Education:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Minimum Experience:
One year relevant experience (for example, teaching, counseling or advising).
Preferred Experience:
Direct experience advising college-level students. Demonstrable commitment to Honors education. Knowledge of Ball State’s Honors College, Honors academic requirements, and university requirements; experience working with student information and degree management software systems; familiarity with Ball State’s current student information and degree management software systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meet individually with Honors College students for degree planning, curricular monitoring, and academic counseling.
- Maintain knowledge about degree requirements in all Ball State majors and university systems as they pertain to course scheduling, course selection, and other functions of university software that are appropriate to professional advisors.
- Tutor new Honors students on interpreting the degree audit program; consult on creation and development of four-year plans for graduation.
- Attend Honors College staff meetings and inform Honors College staff of current and pending issues arising from advising.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Direct and participate in the advising portion of new student orientation; train and supervise summer advisors. Review updated matriculate data to determine necessary schedule adjustments.
- Promote strategies for retention (for example, individual interview sessions to address the following: time management, test anxiety, study skills development, decision-making skills development, or career exploration). Contact students who have received a midterm deficiency to identify the causes of the deficiency and develop corrective strategies. Contact students who have not registered for classes and facilitate the registration process.
- Review and enter four-year plans for first year Honors students into the student degree management software system.
