Job Summary

The Giovanni Armenise Harvard Foundation, was established in 1996 with a gift from Giovanni Armenise that provides ongoing financial support in the form of an endowment and is responsible for supporting basic science research programs that are of benefit to Harvard Medical School (HMS) and foremost research institutions in Italy. The mission of the Foundation is to establish multidisciplinary, basic science research and opportunities for scientific collaboration that will support leading scientists at HMS and in Italy, in the pursuit of knowledge and scientific discovery for the benefit of humankind in the fields of medicine and agriculture. The HMS Dean is President of the Foundation and Count Giampiero Auletta is Chairman of the Board.

Position Description

Program Oversight:

• This role will be responsible for directing and developing the programmatic and operational strategy for the Giovanni Armenise Harvard Foundation.
• Oversee Program hiring and reappointments.
• Oversee and manage all staff-related HR concerns.

Public Relations and Communications:

• The Executive Director must maintain a strong relationship with the family of the Foundation's original donor.
• Work with the Dean and scientific leadership of HMS, as well as Italian scientific leadership, to build the Foundation's strategy, and to design, implement and maintain its scientific programs and activities, including promoting our programs in the U.S. and abroad.
• Oversee the development and implementation of all communications strategy.
• The ED promotes the Armenise Foundation, influences partnerships and engages in opportunities to increase awareness and advance the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the foundation.

Budgeting and Finance:

• This role has fiduciary responsibility for the Foundation's approximately $3.5M annual budget and reports both programmatic and financial activities to and seeks approval from the Board of Trustees. Along with the fiduciary responsibility comes the need to work closely with the HMS Finance Office.
• The ED is responsible for developing and monitoring budgets in alignment with strategic priorities that foster long-term financial sustainability.
• The ED will develop financial plans and projections and should be capable of establishing and overseeing innovative structures to administer research activity at HMS and in Italy.

Conferences and Events:

• Oversee, supervise, manage and work with direct reports on conferences and events communications.
• Oversees Program-hosted events, workshops, and conferences.

Development:

• This role requires a focus on fundraising, in partnership with the HMS Alumni Affairs and Development office, in order to fund new and expand existing programs.
• Oversee communications and meetings with Program donors.
• Identify and meet with new potential donors and develop and support opportunities.

Staff Management:

• Supervises 3 Direct reports (this number is subject to change).
• Must be comfortable supervising a team of individuals working remotely and fostering a close nit working relationship.
• Ability to recruit and organize groups of volunteers. The Foundation has a small paid staff and relies heavily on volunteers to run its programs both in the U.S. and in Italy.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
• 8+ years of administrative management experience.
• Supervisory experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Master's degree preferred.
• A track record in developing and maintaining strong, professional relationships with existing and potential donors.
• Experience in designing, implementing and promoting innovative programs in an academic biomedical setting.
• Ability to operate independently with a strong sense of self-management.
• Regular international travel is required, as well as occasional travel within the U.S. The person in this role must feel comfortable in international settings, and knowledge of Italian academia (particularly in science) is highly desirable.
• The ability to speak Italian is desirable.
• This individual needs to excel in working and communicating with challenging personalities in both academic and non-academic settings and should feel confident leading discussions and working with basic biomedical scientists at all levels, as well as representing the Foundation at international meetings.
• This person should be culturally sensitive, self-motivated, and organized, with the ability to bring people together across academic and cultural boundaries. An important goal will be to continue to develop our research community of grantees, in and between the U.S. and Italy.

Work Format Details

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
