Job Description

Summary

The Garcia Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine is dedicated to identifying novel male infertility genes and potential male contraceptive protein targets through advanced next-generation and long-read whole genome sequencing (LR-WGS), high-throughput transcriptomics, and proteomics approaches. Over the past few years, our lab has independently developed innovative computational tools for processing, analyzing, and interpreting LR-WGS data. Our future goals include refining and updating these programs, as well as creating new ones to address unresolved issues in comprehensive data analysis, prioritization, filtering, and presenting findings according to clinically relevant ACMG guidelines.

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Associate with a computational background or a strong interest in rapidly acquiring these skills with the PI's guidance. The candidate will have access to a wealth of existing and newly acquired genomic sequencing data, offering numerous opportunities to explore new research questions and develop novel analytical approaches. This role involves leading computational analyses of genomic data, contributing to in silico protein-protein interaction studies using modeling and interaction tools, and potentially engaging in wet-lab work if interested. The position offers a stimulating environment with high potential for publishing in high-impact journals and presenting at national and international conferences.

Baylor College of Medicine is located in the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical center, providing a vibrant and collaborative research environment. Houston is a culturally diverse city with a thriving metropolitan atmosphere and a relatively low cost of living.

Job Duties

  • Leads the development, refinement, and implementation of computational tools and pipelines for processing and analyzing long-read whole genome sequencing data.
  • Analyzes existing and newly acquired genomic sequencing data to identify novel genes and genomic regions underlying human male infertility.
  • Engages in in silico analysis of protein-protein interactions using protein modeling and interaction tools, utilizing Linux-based command line software.
  • Collaborates with the PI to formulate new research questions and innovative analytical approaches based on available data.
  • Prepares and presents research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Authors and co-authors manuscripts for publication in high-impact scientific journals.
  • Stays current with advances in bioinformatics and genomics, integrating new methodologies into the lab's research.
  • Optionally participates in wet-lab experiments to complement computational findings.
  • Ensures that project objectives are met in a timely manner under the guidance of the PI.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No experience required.
