What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a hands on graduate level engineering student in the Concentrating Solar Test & Demonstration to assist our R&D staff with the development and testing of new thermal energy applications at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF).

This work may include:

  • Assembling and running experiments related to the heat transfer/thermodynamic performance of supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle systems, thermal energy storage systems
  • Testing on novel high temperature falling particles and molten salt chemistries.
  • Understanding and adherence to applicable Sandia National laboratories ES&H requirements and guidelines will be important for this position as you will be performing hands on experiments and tests.

This position requires the candidate to be able to lift up to 35 pounds, and be able to push and pull.

Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in a related accredited graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

The student will be required to bring confidence and skills to be eligible for the job and have some of these desired skills:

  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year on-site
  • Some familiarity with Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) and alternative energy.
  • Demonstrated experience using MS Office and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, material mechanics
  • Experience using Python, MATLAB, LabView, or any other DAQ/control software
  • Experience in test operation and experimental design
  • Some experience with networking infrastructure
  • Lifting more than 35 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Pushing or pulling

About Our Team:

Department 8925 develops, demonstrates and validates technologies to support concentrating solar installations, operates and maintains the NSTTF, and provides testing for renewable energy, defense and space applications. By demonstrating solar thermal technology solutions for energy and defense applications, this department will support and accelerate the transition to carbon-free energy. While the department focuses on directly addressing needs of existing solar thermal energy systems, team members work closely with colleagues across our energy programs, providing subject matter expertise in testing of systems and materials under thermal stress, operation of large scale multicomponent systems, and demonstrating solar thermal technologies at scale . Efforts span a range of research topics, including molten salt components, heliostat metrology, conjugate effects testing (thermal and sheer stress), and engineering of pilot and demonstration scale implementations of solar thermal technologies.

Security Clearance:
