What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for our nation’s security. If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) organization is seeking Radiological Control Technologists (RCTs) for our Radiological Operations (RO) Programs. RO Programs provide embedded oversight, monitoring, and support to SNL Members of the Workforce who perform radiological work with radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices (RGDs).

The successful candidates selected for the RCT role will be called on to:

  • Attain and maintain SNL RCT qualifications.
  • Under staff-level oversight, provide technical expertise for the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of potential hazards from ionizing radiation, radioactive material, and RGDs.
  • Conduct tests and field investigations to support environmental, engineering, scientific, and mission support personnel in determining sources and methods of controlling radiation hazards.
  • Use a wide variety of radiation detection, monitoring, and measuring instrumentation.
  • Perform radiological surveys of radiation generating devices.
  • Perform radiological surveys of materials, personnel, personal items and equipment leaving radiological areas.
  • Conduct and document radiological surveys, prescribe radiological controls for radiological work, and monitor radiological work.
  • Routinely interact with radiological workers throughout the laboratories and field sites.
  • Respond onsite to radiological incidents and emergencies, and offsite in support of Department of Energy requests.

This position requires the ability to work a modified schedule to accommodate customer and travel demands.

NOTE: This is an onsite position that requires the successful candidate to report to work daily at SNL in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A minimum of (5) years of operational health physics experience as a qualified RCT. Experience must include 10 CFR 835 or 10 CFR 20 implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, and to team effectively with RCTs, engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, and to team effectively with RCTs, engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Ability to qualify for use of respiratory protection.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Office suite).
  • Have a valid driver's license, have access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work locations, be capable of operating a government vehicle.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience.
  • NRRPT registered.
  • Experience as a radiological worker in the DOE complex.
  • Associate of Science degree or Bachelor of Science degree in health physics, radiological science, or closely related STEM discipline.
  • Current DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Current HAZWOPER training.

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization (Group 4610) provides radiation protection services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include translation of DOE directives and federal regulations into SNL-specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
