College/Department Information
The Division of Laboratory Animal Services at Augusta University is a service organization, which facilitates the research and teaching mission of the University by meeting the animal research needs of the research community while concurrently providing for the safe and ethical treatment of research animals. Our emphasis on customer service is demonstrated by providing high quality animal care and research support in a timely manner while being courteous, professional, and responsive to our customers. We maintain a centralized animal care program with administrative management of 6 on-campus and 1 off-campus animal facilities. We report to the Vice President of Research, consult, and collaborate with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The animal use program is accredited by AAALAC, a Registered Research Facility with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA No. 57-R-0002), and has an Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Assurance number.
Job Summary
The Cage Wash Supervisor oversees the cleaning and sterilization of cages and equipment used in animal research, ensuring compliance with sanitation standards and regulatory requirements across all DLAS housing facilities. They supervise and train cage wash technicians, manage workflow and resources, maintain equipment, and uphold quality control measures. Additionally, they oversee inventory management, documentation, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
Provides direct supervision of Cage Wash Techs. Conducts periodic performance evaluations and provides counseling and disciplinary action, up to and including termination in accordance with Augusta University policies and procedures. Participates in new talent acquisition of Cage Wash Techs. Assists DLAS Training Corp with training and proficiency assessments of Cage Wash Techs.
Ensures proper function of cage wash equipment on a daily basis and coordinates the maintenance of bulk sanitation equipment in all facilities, including bulk autoclaves, tunnel washers, and cage washing equipment. Advises the Operations Manager and administration on equipment and facility maintenance and repair issues necessary to maintain the high quality of the animal care program and compliance with industry standards.
Works closely with Animal Facility Supervisors to forecast caging demands to develop and implement efficient workflows to optimize cage washing procedures to ensure timely cleaning and sanitation of animal caging according to established protocols and regulatory standards. Conducts regular inspections of cleaned caging to ensure they meet cleanliness and sterilization standards. Maintains accurate records of housing rack cleaning and sanitation schedules.
Maintains an adequate operating inventory of chemicals and other cage wash consumables to maintain high standards for cage washing.
Ensures DLAS operational policies are followed in order to ensure OLAW, PHS, NIH and USDA, and AAALAC requirements are met. Works with DLAS senior leadership to develop, modify, and implement comprehensive policies and procedures related to the cage wash facilities.
Coordinates a collection of time and motion data, such as daily throughput, in cage wash and shares data with DLAS leadership to help make decisions regarding staffing levels and/or operational changes.
Performs all other related duties/tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED from recognized state or federal organization with three years of experience in laboratory animal facility cagewash or related experience and one year of personnel supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience troubleshooting and repairing mechanical systems.
ALAT certification.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Salary Range: $48,800- $61,000 annually.
Pay Band: B9
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
