What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Intern Year Round - R&D Undergraduate

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Apply fundamental materials characterization principles and metallurgical process development to spray technologies.
  • Interact with members of the 1834 team to develop process parameters.
  • Develop Design of Experiments for process parameters.
  • Design hardware for experimental use.
  • Prepare metallographic samples.

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program pursuing a science, engineering, or math concentration.
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer, and up to 25 hours per week during the academic year.
  • Ability to understand and interpret metallographic images.
  • Ability to translate microstructural properties to process parameters.
  • Ability to use a Scanning Electron Microscope.
  • Ability to use powder and bulk inspection methods to precharacterize feedstock material.

About Our Team:

The Thermal and Kinetic Spray Technologies Department's mission is to provide Subject Matter expertise to the Laboratories in Thermal Spray technologies. We conduct research on the structure, processing, and properties of materials to improve the performance of coatings produced by 1) Plasma Spraying (Air and Controlled Atmosphere), 2) Twin Wire Arc Spraying, 3) Flame Spraying, 4) Cold Spraying and 5) Aerosol Deposition. We routinely support Sandia's engineers to solve a broad range of materials selection, component design, component fabrication, coating process development, and process challenges by applying our fundamental materials science, physics, and chemistry expertise. Our Staff supports a variety of highly visible national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions. The analytic capabilities available in 01834 include: In-flight particle temperature and velocity measurements, In-situ Coating characterization, Ex-situ coating characterization, Coating characterization, Topology characterization and Particle Size Analysis. The R&D work conducted within 1834 is part of the broader 1800 capability to deliver materials solutions to challenging mission problem.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
