Summary

DISCO (Discovery, Integration, Success, Community, and Outreach) is the School of Medicine’s integrative academic support program, providing holistic support to medical students. Lead, Program Management will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations for core academic support services for Undergraduate Medical Students, such as academic advising and peer-tutoring. The Lead, Program Management will also provide academic support to medical students during transition throughout the milestones of their program.

This position will work primarily in Houston, Texas with some occasional travel to Temple, Texas. Increased travel to Temple the first 90 days of employment for program training and development.

Office hours at Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. with occasional nights and weekends. This position is eligible for hybrid work after the completion of a review period.

Job Duties

Academic Support:

  • Provides 1:1 academic advising and develops individual plans based on broader programmatic objectives to support School of Medicine students.
  • Assesses the academic progress of at-risk students and assist them in developing individualized study and remediation plans.
  • Refers students, as appropriate, for specialized services (disability accommodations, mental health assessments).
  • As a member of the team, manages DISCO services (e.g., peer tutoring, workshops, etc.) for BCM School of Medicine students (Temple and Houston).
  • Partners with Senior Coordinator and Lead, Academic Services on DISCO projects and tasks assigned by Director.
  • Maintains and enhances events, services, programs, and opportunities to support students during transition to medical school and throughout their program, including Acclimating into Medicine (AIM) and Pre-Matriculation Program.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Program Support - General:

  • Leads process improvement efforts within the program.
  • Manages tutor and peer mentor recruitment efforts, including marketing the program, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and attending recruiting events.
  • Provides financial management support for the program, including budget development and monitoring, financial analysis, and forecasting.
  • May perform Pre- and Post-grant management activities.
  • May perform activities to support School of Medicine initiatives and Human Relations.
  • Collaborates with DISCO leadership to assess and develop academic and support resources and services aligned with curriculum and academic standards.
  • Ensures programs and other student services align with and meet compliance and accreditation guidelines.
  • Answers student questions through e-mail, phone calls, and in-person consultations.

Program Support - Strategic:

  • Partners with Director to develop and oversee strategic planning initiatives.
  • Supports DISCO assessment strategies by working with the team to ensure evaluation and collection of identified metrics to demonstrate quality and outcomes of programming.
  • Develops marketing materials to engage learners in utilizing academic support resources and services for both print and web.
  • In collaboration with DISCO leadership, develop communications for BCM Temple students.
  • Will work in Houston, Texas with some occasional travel to Temple, Texas.

Office Support:

  • Provides administrative and logistical support to all BCM Student Affairs office events (Orientation, Family Day, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Graduation, etc.)
  • Reports to and partners with Senior Manager on Office of Student Affairs (OSA) initiatives and events.
  • Partners with Senior Academic Services Associate on communications and marketing.
  • Partners with Coordinator, Program Management regarding events and activity logistics.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Senior Manager, Director DISCO and Student Affairs Deans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Six years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree.
  • 2-3 years' experience as a Learning Specialist in Medical Education and 2-3 years' experience in Program Management.
  • Experience supporting Step 1 and Step 2 preparation for MD students.
