What Your Job Will Be Like:

Radiation Protection (RP) is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Health Physicist with wide-ranging skills and capabilities in both technical depth and breadth of all Operational Health Physics areas, including and especially Accelerator Health Physics, Nuclear Facilities, Nuclear Weapons, Nuclear Deterrence, Radioactive Material Handling and Waste Management, and Production Facilities, as well as the overall administration and implementation of all elements of Regulatory Compliance for Radiation Protection Programs and Training.

Candidates selected for this role will be called upon to provide conceptualization, development, implementation and leadership of assigned projects in any of these spaces, as well as higher level ES&H Center planning and projects, acting as an RP Subject Matter Expert (SME) and ES&H liaison and dedicated Point of Contact (PoC) in support of all such assigned projects within the RP Organization and the ES&H Center.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Act as a RP prime POC and liaison to the ES&H Center related to Center planning, projects and goals
  • Lead RP projects alongside Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers, Health Physics Technologists and Radiological Control Technicians to ensure the proper implementation and application of Operational and/or Programmatic elements
  • Provide expert-level advisement on the identification of radiological hazards and controls in all experimental and production environments encountered in operational spaces
  • Provide expert-level advisement to the RP Program, its Partners and Customers in the interpretation and application of all relevant regulations, orders, and compliance documents related to RP
  • Provide expert-level advisement to RP Management toward project resolutions and resource allocations
  • Provide expert-level review and/or revision of radiation protection documentation
  • Lead RP participation as an RP SME on Work Planning and Safety Committees
  • Perform expert-level technical analysis on shielding, containment, respiratory protection, nuclear reactions, radiological monitoring and ALARA
  • Author technical and programmatic documents for the interpretation, understanding, and implementation of the RP organization and ES&H Center
  • Lead and/or participate in and support internal RP audits and assessments as well as external audits and assessments as an RP SME
  • Train and mentor all levels of RP personnel in the implementation and application of all RP programs and services
  • Provide SME-level experience and leadership in the development of training programs for Health Physicists (HPs)
  • Provide SME-level experience and leadership in the implementation of quality within the RP Program
  • Provide overall subject matter expertise in the development and implementation of RP Emergency Management

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$127,900 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, health physics or nuclear engineering preferred, plus a minimum of (12) years staff-level diverse operational and programmatic health physics experience
  • Master’s candidates, minimum of (8) years staff-level diverse operational and programmatic health physics experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • + Working knowledge of 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20
  • Current computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications
  • Understanding of specialized Health Physics instrumentation and software (e.g., related to radiation transport and shielding, consequence assessment, decay and activation, spectroscopy, dosimetry, etc.)
  • Ability to occasionally work a modified schedule to meet customer needs and travel
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a private vehicle for travel to and from work location
  • Experience providing dedicated operational and programmatic health physics project management and expert-level guidance for the growth and success of a Radiation Protection Program
  • Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other health physicists and technologists
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility
  • Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously at center, group, program and project levels moving seamlessly between the levels
  • Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact, and providing expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods
  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or in the process of obtaining certification
  • Experience working in fast-paced research, development, and operational environments
  • Active DOE “L” or “Q” level security clearance

About Our Team:

The Radiation Protection Organization provides radiation protection services to Sandia line organizations and is the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services provided include: translation of DOE directives and Federal rules into Sandia specific requirements and guidance; development of tools to assist in the identification and control of hazards associated with the use of radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel for radiological activities and operations throughout the Laboratories; radiation protection instrumentation calibration and maintenance; and workplace sampling and monitoring services to ensure effectiveness of radiological controls. The Organization works with the Corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and perform assessments to collect data to support continuous improvement in the safe performance of radiological operations across Sandia National Laboratories.
