Lead Medical Technologist (MT)

Medical Technologists (MT) work with the healthcare team to gather and provide laboratory information to caregivers that assists them with patient diagnosis and treatment. This diagnostic data can also provide vital information for disease prevention and health monitoring. As a Lead Medical Technologist, you will also be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of all test results through directing testing personnel.

A caregiver in this position works 7:00am – 3:30pm.


A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and theory of applicable Clinical Laboratory Medicine in order to produce required measure of accuracy.

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory procedures (waived, moderately complex or highly complex testing as defined by CLIA) using standard and sophisticated/specialized instrumentation and equipment in accordance with established procedures.

  • Aid in proper reagent and chemical solution preparation, labeling and storage.

  • Evaluate validity of test results using quality control standards, instrumentation function checks, and/or department policies and procedures.

  • Evaluate and record test results in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Initiate appropriate corrective action to alleviate any deficiencies of quality assurance standards or established specified limits.

  • Consistently coordinate all work with co-workers to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during the assigned shift.

  • Perform, document and review preventive maintenance measures on department's equipment and instruments.

  • Provide general supervision to medical technology students and others in training or orientation.

  • Always show awareness and address all proper safety procedures to insure a safe work environment.

  • Compile various data, statistics and reports.

  • Complete all mandatory in-service programs and all continuing education required to maintain specific certification.

  • Assume duties of supervisor in their absence or as needed/requested.

  • Assist in the validation/verification of new assays under the direction of the Supervisor and the Medical Director.

  • Perform validation/verification analysis, collect and analyze data and prepare for Medical Director review.

  • Write technical procedures and submit them to the Supervisor and Medical Director for review and the Laboratory Director for approval.

  • Train medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians in new testing procedures.

  • Assist with the implementation of newly developed clinical tests.

  • Effectively resolve daily technical and theoretical problems.

  • Serve as a technical resource for the laboratory testing personnel, supervisors and other caregivers.

  • Assist in the interpretation and review of the clinical results.

  • Ensure pending logs and worksheets are performed in a timely manner.

  • Assist with ensuring the procedure manuals are up to date and that annual reviews of procedure manuals are conducted.

  • Assist in receiving and distributing Proficiency Testing samples according to the set rotation schedule of technologists who will perform the testing.

  • Assists in submitting results to CAP by the set due date.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a four-year college or university.

  • Three to five years of clinical laboratory training and/or experience in high complexity testing.

  • One year of training from an approved Medical Technologist (MT), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program.


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Two years of clinical laboratory leadership experience.

  • MT (ASCP) or ASCP eligible.
