The Ball State University Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a tenure-line Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Tap Dance position beginning August of 2025.
The Department seeks an individual with a commitment to collaborative discourse, interdisciplinary inquiry, and entrepreneurial learning practices to work in our BFA/BA/BS dance programs. We are seeking a colleague to join our vibrant community and be a part of our innovative and collaborative dance program where the faculty and staff foster the development of compassionate, inclusive, and empathetic artists and human beings. The candidate will demonstrate excellence in inclusive approaches in the areas of Musical Theatre, Tap, and Jazz dance techniques. They should foster teaching practices that align with the mission and strategic plans of the university, college, and department. Applicants should also be committed to inclusive pedagogies in their teaching, scholarship, and artistry.
Our dynamic faculty function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive, and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond the home unit, serving as quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond. Additionally, lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one’s lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department’s, college’s, and university’s lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.
Duties and responsibilities will include the following:
  • A teaching load that may include all levels of course work in musical theatre dance, jazz, tap, art of storytelling, audition, and introduction to theatre or dance;
  • Creation and execution of choreography for selected department productions;
  • The ideal candidate will also have expertise in one additional technique area including, but not limited to choreography, Hip Hop, commercial, or West African dance;
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the vision, design, and management of the Dance program;
  • Supervision and mentoring of student choreographers in assigned productions;
  • A dedication and commitment to helping foster and cultivate overall student success;
  • Creating an active and tenure-worthy professional profile in the area of musical theatre and dance. This includes a balance of work in professional venues, scholarly activity, presentations at reputable theatre and dance conferences, and other related professional activities that benefit the candidate, University, Department, and students being served.
  • Fulfilling service obligations, including assigned committee work at the Department, College, and University level, on a national, regional, and local level.
  • Working in collaboration with theatre and dance faculty, staff, and students in facilitating the theatre and dance production program at Ball State University.

Salary and benefit packages for this position are competitive, with salaries for this opportunity beginning at $53,000 annually.

Minimum Experience:

  • Master’s degree in dance, musical theatre, or related discipline or equivalent professional experience completed by date of employment.
  • At least 4 months (one semester) of teaching experience at the university/college level.
  • Ability to teach musical theatre dance, jazz, and tap.
  • The ability to serve as a recruiter and advocate on a National level for the BFA Dance and Musical Theatre programs.

Preferred Experience:

M.F.A in Dance, Choreography, or Musical Theatre
  • 24 months (three academic years) of teaching experience at the university/college level.
  • Ability to teach classes in choreography, commercial, West African, or Hip-Hop dance.
  • Substantial experience as a choreographer, performer, or director on Broadway, with established dance companies, or in major Regional dance and theatre venues.
  • Significant connections and recognitions within the professional dance and musical theatre industries.
