What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Senior Manager of the Protective Technologies (PT) Group reports to the Director of the Cyber Threat Center (CTC), which is part of the Threat Intelligence Community (TIC). Protective Technologies consists of five (5) technical departments with over 70 staff and managers. The Protective Technologies organization operates the Counterfeit Detection Center (CDC), a world class capability in hardware vulnerability assessment R&D and analysis. The CDC is a 34k ft2 secure laboratory consisting of co-located microsystems hardware reverse engineering laboratories and the Vulnerability Capability Unit (VCU). The team partners across Sandia, as well as with USG and commercial industry, to pioneer new techniques and tools in vulnerability assessment and analysis of microelectronics and complex systems. The VCU is a resource for design communities and decision makers that applies a diverse set of expertise to mission problems and assessments including nuclear weapons.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead a dynamic team, focused on applied cutting edge assurance R&D, that crosscuts multiple National Security missions.
  • Work with the management team to foster innovation and recruit/develop the expertise needed to advance the mission into the future.
  • Collaborate across the Laboratory to enable the mission and develop new capabilities/programs.
  • Lead capability sustainment, lifecycle management, and strategic direction for the Counterfeit Detection Center assessment capability, regularly engaging internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responsible and accountable for safe and secure CDC operations in close partnership with colleagues from ES&H, Facilities, Procurement, and the Field Intelligence Element (FIE).
  • Manage a program area, including Sandia’s DoD Anti-Tamper sub-program, of ~$30M in revenue involving over 100 FTEs from across the Laboratory.
  • Lead the Lab Cyber Strategy (LCS) Hardware Automated System Understanding (ASU) strategic thrust.
  • Partner across the laboratory to support nascent ND Cyber Assurance activities aligning Cyber Subject Matter Expert (SME) resources with assessment needs and capability development.
  • Lead Center 5600’s Strategic Goal 2, focused on culture, community, and staff/manager partnerships.

This position requires some domestic travel, averaging 8-12 trips per year. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$175,100 - $297,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other closely related science/engineering (STEM) discipline
  • Plus ten or more years of technical experience.
  • Plus five years of relevant management or leadership experience.
  • Experience with SPP and SIPP processes and related NNSA requirements.
  • Active US DOE Q or DoD TS security clearance is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an SCI security clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD SAP accesses.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work with sensitive information and classified matter while applying need to know principles in a high security environment.
  • Experience with microelectronics development and fabrication.
  • Cyber or related research and development experience.
  • Experience in developing and leading cyber security related technologies and projects.
  • Experience in microsystems failure analysis, assurance, and/or vulnerability analysis.
  • Experience with capability and facility management including sustainment, lifecycle planning, and strategic advancement.
  • Experience with laboratory operations management including environmental, safety, and health work planning and controls.
  • Passion and vision for integrating across the laboratory and linking between the S&T community and National Security missions.
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with managers and staff.
  • Active US DOE Q security clearance
  • Active SCI security clearance, with updated polygraph test.
  • Active DoD SAP accesses.

The center is engaged in developing and applying tools to analyze complex systems and technologies for vulnerabilities and developing and transferring solutions to help protect the nation’s most critical systems.

Security Clearance:
