Job Description

Summary

The Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Division in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine seeks a board certified general or surgical critical care surgeon to join as Associate Professor to provide coverage at affiliate hospital Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) and other affiliates, as needed. This candidate will also serve as the Surgical Director of the Baylor College of Medicine Simulation Core. The Simulation Core at BCM is seeking a surgical director who is enthusiastic about simulation and ready to establish BCM as a world-class leader in simulation-based learning and research.

Job Duties

  • 20-30% protected time dedicated to Sim Lab Surgical Director responsibilities, with remainder of time committed to clinical and/or funded research responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively to implement the overall vision and mission for the Simulation Core. This includes strategic planning as well as ongoing collaborations with internal and external stakeholders such as: academic departments, School of Medicine, School of Health Professions, Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education, and the Baylor College of Medicine Temple Campus.
  • Develop curriculum and plans for advancing simulation and technology in Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education and work together with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • Supervise key faculty, professional and support staff assigned to simulation and technology functions.
  • Oversee personnel activities, including, but not limited to, recruitment, employee selection, appraisals, and evaluation.
  • Conduct clinical activities at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
  • Contribute to the success of the organization through high quality patient care services.
  • Actively participate in college, department, hospital, and clinical professional meetings.
  • Maintain an interest and course of professional growth through completion of continuing medical education requirements.
  • Actively participate in all mission-critical efforts -- clinical, research and/or education, to grow the surgical simulation program at Baylor College of Medicine and the acute care surgery service Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Texas Medical Board certification or eligibility.
  • Completion of a certified general surgery residency program.
  • American Board of Surgery certification or eligibility for general surgery and/or surgical critical care.
  • Relevant certificates in education and/or surgical simulation training.
  • Ideal candidates will have a record of clinical excellence in acute care surgery. Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching medical students, surgery residents, and fellows.
