What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Environmental Technologist to join the Environmental Compliance and Monitoring field team. The successful candidate would be expected to perform required sampling, monitoring and evaluation of conditions at a wide range of facilities related to, but not limited to, wastewater, stormwater, surface water discharge, safe drinking water, air quality, terrestrial surveillance, environmental media handling, and sampling, environmental remediation, weather data, environmental waste characterization and environmental releases and cleanup.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Maintain, calibrate, develop, modify, troubleshoot, repair, and deployment of environmental field monitoring equipment to acquire the highest quality data possible.
  • Support environmental field operations pertaining to water, wastewater instrumentation maintenance and required sampling, sampling of environmental media, waste characterization, environmental release response and cleanup, analytical techniques, watershed management, telemetry, weather data collection, ecology.
  • Support data acquisition, analysis and be able to conduct all related environmental media monitoring and field sampling.
  • Participate on the site spill response team and ability to be “on-call”.
  • Analyze and report data in support of regulatory permits and other compliance activities.
  • Participate in the development of procedures and technical work documents to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient implementation of environmental field monitoring activities.
  • Team with environmental Subject Mater Experts (SMEs) to review environmental regulatory requirements to ensure that environmental field monitoring is being conducted properly.

Salary Range:

$60,300 - $116,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High School Diploma plus five (5) or more years of experience and applied technical knowledge in environmental compliance, continuous monitoring, and environmental media sample collection.
  • Experienced and a strong understanding with environmental field operations pertaining to water, wastewater instrumentation maintenance, and required sampling, sampling of environmental media, waste characterization, environmental release cleanup, analytical techniques, watershed management, weather data collection, ecology.
  • Experienced in calibrating water quality sensors, wastewater probes, transducers, or other data collection devices.
  • Experienced with one or more of the following: environmental datalogger systems, remote logger telemetry, datalogger programming, or general coding experience.
  • Proficiency in common office software, such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • The Ability to Obtain and Maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Experience and knowledgeable with sampling and handling of environmental media and waste.
  • Experience with hazmat or emergency response operations (40-hour HAZWOPER)
  • Experience with hazardous waste management.
  • Experience with operating forklifts or other heavy equipment.
  • Experience with reviewing and analyzing large datasets of water quality parameters.
  • Familiarity with operating and managing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for water quality.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain professional certifications commensurate with responsibilities and assignments related to wastewater, stormwater, safe drinking water and air quality.
  • Ability to identify any potential environmental compliance risks and hazards.
  • Ability to provide on-call support 24/7/365 to ensure regulatory compliance.

About Our Team:

The Environmental Compliance and Monitoring Department collects environmental data to ensure regulatory compliance, monitors Sandia's potential environmental impact, and assists organizations in maintaining compliance and minimizing potential impacts of their work activities.

Posting Duration:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
