What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated Year-Round R&D Undergraduate Intern interested in performing applied research and development in the field of analytical chemistry. Our analytical laboratories employ an expansive suite of gas, liquid, and solid analytical tools (GC, GC/MS, LC/PDA, UPLC/MS, DART/MS, IC, GPC, ICP/MS, ICP/OES, LECO, LIBS) to solve problems and further fundamental understanding of materials interactions. The Analytical Science & Corrosion Department is part of the Material, Physical, and Chemical Sciences Center (Center 1800). Center 1800 more broadly supports Sandia’s mission by assisting in the prediction of performance and reliability of materials, developing/processing new materials through computation and synthesis, and the development of novel characterization and diagnostic tools and approaches.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Assist staff and technologists in developing new methodologies or tools for measuring gas, liquid, or solid compositions and their impurities
  • Utilize existing tools and technologies in unique ways to solve complex problems
  • Learn about a variety of processes and products and select appropriate analytical tools to evaluate those processes and products
  • Work in a team environment, learn from others, and contribute your knowledge to the team
  • Publish and/or present the results of your work both internally and externally
  • Assist with general chemistry lab upkeep and maintenance

Student internships are career development opportunities. We are especially interested in supporting students who are planning to pursue a related field in graduate school. The position will give the student the opportunity to develop skills in materials characterization and mass spectrometry.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Academic standing as a Sophomore or Junior is preferred
  • Currently pursuing a chemistry degree
  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • Experience in safe handling of chemicals and materials
  • Availability to work on site at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque NM
  • Strong work ethic and enthusiasm for learning new things and performing scientific research
  • Classes/experience with chromatography and mass spectrometry systems

The reliability of devices, components, and ultimately systems is directly affected by the properties and interactions of their constituent materials. The prime goal of the Analytical Science & Corrosion Department is to ensure that effective materials-related information is provided to customers who design and field high-consequence hardware, such that long-term reliability will be attained. Our department's R&D activities focus on the needs of Sandia's Nuclear Weapons program customers. We also provide support to customers in other areas including Energy and Environment and National Security Programs. We have expertise in gas/solid interactions, corrosion and electrochemistry, and the aging and mechanical properties of ceramics, glasses and other brittle materials. Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
