What Your Job Will Be Like:
For the summer of 2025, we are seeking an engineering undergraduate interested in cross-disciplinary engineering exposure as part of supporting our unique mission space: the safe and secure transportation of our nation's most vital assets. In the area of safe, secure transportation, we have opportunities for individuals from all disciplines of engineering to solve complex problems associated with:
- Advanced transporter design, sustainment, and aging
- Physical security and access delay
- Electrical, Communication, and Embedded systems
- Environment sensor design packages and data analytics
- Safety evaluations for crash/abnormal environments
- Probabilistic Safety and Security Risk Assessment
- Cargo Securement and advanced tie-down concepts
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Work as part of a team to brainstorm solutions to challenging technical problems.
- Participate in planned tours, activities, and staff briefings.
- Apply data analytics techniques for feature extraction.
- Conduct analyses of safety and security assessments.
- Design electro-mechanical components of security systems.
- Develop computer models of components and structures.
- Conduct full scale crash simulations.
- Support assembly and testing of components and systems.
- Analyze data and make assessments on requirements verification.
- Develop conceptual prototypes of designs for demonstration, integration, and testing in Security Systems.
Salary Range:

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:
You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:
- Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
- Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Prior relevant intern experience in engineering analysis, design, or testing.
- Hands-one experience and interest in fabrication, component assembly, 3D printing and prototyping hardware.
- Hobbies/interest related to automotive repair, communication systems, embedded systems, mechanical and electrical designs, welding/fabrication, and mechanical and electrical testing.
- Experience using solid modeling software.
- Knowledge and experience in electric and autonomous vehicle technology.
- Existing Q clearance
- A member of various engineering societies.

The Transportation Safeguards and Surety Program has responsibility for developing technical solutions that ensure the safety and security of the nation's nuclear assets during over the road shipment. With capabilities spanning the R-D-A spectrum, the team enables America's nuclear deterrence through sustainment of the existing fleet of Safeguards Transporters (SGT) while developing the next generation Mobile Guardian Transporters (MGT). In support of those primary missions, our team leads assessments of safety and security vulnerabilities and conducts research and development in resilient structural design, secure communications, and access delay technologies. Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
