Job Description

The Medium Energy Group in the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a junior staff position in experimental medium energy nuclear physics. We are especially looking for candidates whose research program aligns with the 2023 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Physics, focusing on hadronic physics experiments at facilities such as CEBAF at Jefferson Lab and EIC at Brookhaven National Laboratory. We aim to appoint at the rank of Assistant Physicist (equivalent to a tenure-track Assistant Professor), with a start date as early as January 2025. Applications received by 5pm CDT Wednesday, October 9, 2024, will receive our fullest consideration.

Every member of our group is fully dedicated to research, focused on their independent yet complementary research program. They also contribute to the MEP group, physics division, and scientific community at large through service, but without the added responsibilities of teaching or user facility support duties. The overarching research program from our group is supported by base funding from the US DOE Office of Nuclear Physics. Furthermore, there are many resources available to develop a new research program, e.g. through Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) funding, or through external Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) from the DOE Office of Nuclear Physics.

The Medium Energy Group currently consists of eight staff members, two engineers, and several postdocs and students. Our program includes:

  • Electron scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, B, and C, including CLAS12 and SoLID and the MUSE experiment at PSI.

  • Developing the scientific and experimental program for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).

  • Drell-Yan experiments at Fermilab.

Additionally, we have a comprehensive program in detector technology, focusing on super-conducting nanowire detectors and pixelized MCP-PMTs. We are leading the design and construction of the Barrel Imaging Calorimeter for ePIC at the EIC, collaborating closely with the Theory and Accelerator R&D groups in the Physics Division, and with the High-Energy Physics and Material Science Divisions.

Application Process:

Complete the application via Workday and include Cover Letter, Curriculum Vitae (CV), and a Statement of Research Interests. Arrange for three recommendation letters to be sent to the same email address, pdahlberg@anl.gov., Paula Dahlberg.
