Job Description

The Advanced Photon Source is seeking a self-motivated experimentalist to support research and operations at several spectroscopy beamlines. This position will focus specifically on the new Sector 25 canted ID beamlines, which feature an X-ray microprobe station for fluorescence mapping, micro-spectroscopy, and confocal imaging, as well as advanced spectroscopy stations for high resolution fluorescence spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy using bent crystal analyzers and miniature X-ray spectrometers, and X-ray Raman spectroscopy. The SPC beamlines support research programs in environmental, biological, chemistry, catalysis, and energy science, and are operated in partnership with the Canadian Light Source.
As a beamline scientist, the selected candidate will work closely with the SPC group, support general users, and conduct a collaborative and independent science program. The SPC group has a strong collaborative team environment with opportunities to learn from and teach others within the group. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physics and detailed knowledge of confocal X-ray microscopy and X-ray excited optical luminescence experiments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Support and maintain the SPC X-ray beamline components, including experimental setups such as motorized components, Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) focusing mirror systems, low and high temperature apparatus, energy dispersive detectors, and computer control.
• Initiate and participate in research activities, including new X-ray measurements and analysis to advance Spectroscopy at the APS.
• Interact with users to conduct spectroscopy experiments using X-ray techniques, including XEOL and confocal X-ray microscopy.
• Perform experimental data treatment and processing as part of independent research and user support.
• Advance the spectroscopy user program at the APS.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations for the SPC beamlines.

Position Requirements

• Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Demonstrated publication record using synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy.
• Experience in X-ray spectroscopy and related data analysis and modeling.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technical staff, and users.
• At least six years of experience conducting independent experimental research at synchrotron facilities.
• Experience in managing and directing projects, as demonstrated by roles such as project lead, program manager, or review committee member.
• Strong problem solving, analytical, communication and time management skills.
• Familiarity with safety regulations in the context of synchrotron facilities.

Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
