The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University seeks a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor to serve as a general anesthesiologist. This position will participate in research and provide clinical care in Anesthesiology. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This position is not considered to be on tenure track.
Responsibilities
  • 95% Clinical
  • Develop a clinical practice in the field of Adult General Anesthesia.
  • Billing units at or in excess of the 65th percentile ASA units based on annually updated industry benchmarks for academic anesthesia departments (e.g. SAAA).
  • Assist in the recruitment of faculty, physician extenders and mid-level providers as applicable.
  • Review and revise as necessary operational and workflow processes in the Adult General Anesthesia Division to enhance quality of care, efficiency, and revenue stream.

The physician anesthesiologist directs the Anesthesia Care Teams (ACT) and is responsible for the following:
  • Management of personnel: The anesthesiologist will ensure the assignment of appropriately skilled mid-level providers for each patient and procedure.
  • Preanesthetic evaluation of the patient: Preanesthetic evaluation allows the Anesthesiologist to develop an anesthetic plan that considers the patient's current condition, co-existing diseases, and postoperative care requirements.
  • Prescribing the anesthetic plan: The physician anesthesiologist will prescribe an anesthesia plan designed for the greatest safety and highest quality of care for each patient.
  • Management of the anesthetic: The physician anesthesiologist, who may delegate specific tasks to qualified members of the ACT, ensures that quality of care and patient safety are not compromised, participates in critical parts of the anesthesia, and remains immediately available for management of emergencies.
  • Postanesthesia care: Routine postanesthesia care is coordinated by a physician anesthesiologist and delegated to postanesthesia nurses under the medical supervision of a physician anesthesiologist. The physician anesthesiologist will provide appropriate post anesthetic care for patients.
  • Anesthesia consultation: Comparable to other forms of medical consultation, the anesthesiology consultation is the practice of medicine and may not be delegated to non-physicians.

Required Qualifications
MD, DO degree or foreign equivalent with Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate, current Georgia medical license, board eligible or board certified in Anesthesiology.
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:
- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
- Evidence of ability as a teacher;
- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.
Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
