What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an experienced R&D S&E, Systems Engineering to assist in conducting global engagements and identify, develop, evaluate, and deploy engineered solutions in support of DOE/NNSA Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NA-213) and U.S. Department of State International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (DOS-INL) missions.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead and manage engineering projects related to our counter nuclear proliferation and border security.
  • Apply structural engineering principles to design and evaluate infrastructure supporting security measures.
  • Apply engineering principles to the design of physical protection systems including land ports of entry, security checkpoints and facility security systems.
  • Provide broad expertise, including soil analysis, foundation design, and subsurface investigation, to ensure the safety and stability of project sites.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of engineering projects, ensuring they meet technical specifications, budgetary constraints, and timelines.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, scientists, and government agencies, to achieve project objectives.
  • Prepare detailed reports, technical documents, and presentations for stakeholders, including international partners.
  • Ensure compliance with local and international regulations, standards, and best practices in all engineering activities.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and technical staff.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related STEM field, plus five (5) years or more of directly related experience; Or Masters degree as mentioned above, plus one (1) or more years experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional engineering experience.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) certification required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience in the following:
  • Geotechnical engineering, with knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation design, and site assessments.
  • Structural engineering, particularly in the design and evaluation of security-related infrastructure.
  • Working on projects related to nuclear proliferation, border security, or national defense is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience managing large-scale international projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to travel internationally as required.

About Our Team:

The Secure Commerce and Border Systems Department (6813) provides systems engineering expertise to ensure the successful implementation of programs and projects that further critical national security missions in support of multiple National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) efforts. The department stewards Division 6000 capabilities applied to vital missions across the International, Homeland, and Nuclear Security Program Management Unit (PMU). The department\'s expertise is applied across the entire life-cycle of high-value asset security systems engineering program execution, spanning planning, definition, research, development, analysis, implementation, control, and testing of systems and their components, ultimately delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to reduce global proliferation and terrorism risks.Our current portfolio focuses on strengthening the global capability to deter, detect, and interdict illicit nuclear and radiological material crossing international borders, including airports, seaports, and land crossings. We work closely with NNSA, other national laboratories, domestic and foreign industry, facility operators, and foreign government officials. The department\'s key role is to lead systems engineering and integration activities to develop and deploy effective radiation detection systems at selected international border locations, and to perform systems-level acceptance testing. The department also leads and partners with other organizations at SNL to perform research and development for the Borders and Maritime Security subprogram in support of the Department of Homeland on a wide variety of topics. These topics include researching, developing, and implementing solutions to cargo security problems; optimizing operations at ports of entry; building, testing and implementing new methods and simulation tools to assess systems-level risk and evaluate the effectiveness of border and near-coastal security systems; enhancing situational awareness and guiding tactical operations and technology deployments; building new tools for detecting, tracking, and interdicting illegal border crossers; and supporting analyses for domestic nuclear detection efforts.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
