What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Sandia Microsystems Engineering, Science and Applications (MESA) Center (5200) is excited to announce an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to become the manager of one of three Silicon Microfabrication (Si Fab) Departments (5278), with responsibility for photolithography, wet etch, dry etch, and chemical mechanical polishing. As the selected department manager, you will have the responsibility of overseeing a team of approximately 15 process and tool engineers, as well as a dedicated R&D team leader who manages around 25 tool maintenance technologists.

In this role, you will be tasked with managing and enhancing the operations of our MESA Si Fab facility, playing a critical role in serving our Nuclear Deterrence (ND), Strategic Partnership Projects (SPP) and R&D customers in support of the National Security Program (NSP). It is essential that you are comfortable and effective in working within a time-sensitive environment, where meeting deadlines and delivering exceptional results are of utmost importance. This facility handles a diverse range of semiconductor technologies, catering to a variety of customers. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the delivery of high-quality products within specified timelines, all while maintaining a strong commitment to safety.

On any given day you may be called on to:

  • Ensure the safety, productivity, tool uptime, and product and process quality across these areas within the 11,900 square foot Class 1 MESA Silicon Fab by:
  • Demonstrating exceptional leadership by providing guidance, mentorship, and direction to staff and team leaders, ensuring their technical growth and development.
  • Managing production control functions in the Si Fab, meticulously overseeing operations to achieve on-time and high-quality deliverables for all customers, through the team’s advanced technical expertise and process optimization initiatives.
  • Collaborating closely with the peer engineering, product, and technology departments to ensure seamless product flow, employing proactive communications, customer engagement, expeditious response times, and close collaboration with peer departments to minimize interruptions to flow.
  • Engaging with key partners in the business team, procurement, facilities, computer information management, safety, and security to sustain fab operations, leveraging technical expertise to drive effective coordination and alignment.
  • Developing and reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), using data analytics and statistical methodologies to extract meaningful insights, and lead improvement initiatives that drive reduced cycle time, increased yield, minimal stoppages, and enhanced operational efficiency.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate\'s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant STEM field plus eight (8) or more years of directly related experience or;
  • Master’s degree in engineering or other relevant STEM field plus four (4) or more years of directly related experience
  • Two (2) or more years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated technical project leadership experience, showcasing a track record of successful deliverables
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling the development of trust-based relationships among staff, peers, partners, and customers
  • Proven experience in implementing continuous process improvement methodologies, engineering controls, mistake-proofing techniques, and/or application of Lean Six Sigma principles
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical development activities while meeting customer requirements, including cost, schedule, and performance targets
  • Technical leadership and/or management experience in semiconductor fabrication, fab management, or other product production environments
  • In-depth technical knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes, including research and development aspects necessary for building new prototypes and pathfinders
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, effectively managing multiple priorities and delivering results within tight deadlines

The Silicon Fab is one of two Fabs within Center 05200, with the Micro Fab as the other. The Silicon Fab has processing expertise in CMOS, MEMS, Silicon Photonics, and Ion Trap technologies. Over 150 tools are maintained, supported and operated 24 hours per day, 5 days a week (3 shifts). Processing and maintenance expertise are staffed on all 3 shifts. We offer unique prototyping capabilities and are capable of producing full flow production lots as well as performing flexible process development. We are capable of producing highly customized, low-volume production, or prototyping devices and have flexible processing capabilities.
