We are seeking an Electromechanical Technologist to integrate into highly dynamic teams in a high consequence environment. In this fast-paced team environment, you will effectively communicate, think on your feet, improvise, and work safely towards solutions while taking on complex problems, demanding timelines, and physical constraints of the test setups.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Set up instrumentation and data acquisition systems to capture data on high-consequence energetic events.
  • Photograph experiments with digital and/or high-speed video cameras.
  • Setup and operate x-ray equipment and process x-ray images.
  • Make various types of custom length diagnostic cabling.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot instrumentation issues during tests with demanding timelines.
  • Operate heavy equipment to move concrete blocks, steel walls, or large test fixtures.
  • Fabricate and weld test fixtures and stands.
  • Handle energetic materials, including transportation and inventory.
  • Build explosive assemblies.
  • Operate electric low and high voltage, and nonelectric firing systems.
  • Complete explosive operations.
  • Maintain and repair the laboratory, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Assist with work planning and controls documentation.
  • Perform work mostly outdoors in partnership with multiple an explosives test site at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico and occasionally at other DOE locations in Nevada.
  • Participate in formal classroom training, organization specific on-the-job training (OJT), hands-on practical training, and knowledge/skill demonstrations.

Travel occasionally, up to 10% of the time.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$70,200 - $135,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High school diploma plus three (3) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a relevant high-consequence environment.
  • Experience with Sandia corporate (or equivalent) safety principles.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Associates degree or certificate (or higher) in an electronics-centered or related STEM field, or equivalent military or civilian experience.
  • Experience with the following:
  • One or more data acquisition techniques, including strain and pressure gauging, high speed video imaging, photonic doppler velocimetry, flash radiography, oscilloscope and delay generator operation.
  • Machining, welding, or fabrication.
  • Skid Steer, telehandler, and/or forklift operation.
  • Familiarity with photography, image processing, and data reduction.
  • Energetic materials and arming and firing systems.
  • Interior and terminal ballistics.
  • Remote field testing and eager to work frequently outdoors.
  • Willingness to adapt to evolving department needs by acquiring new knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent.

About Our Team:

Group 6640 provides innovative training and explosive testing to counter strategic threats. We solve some of the nation’s top energetic challenges with focused research, design and performance validation, ground breaking predictive modeling, material characterization, effects analysis, high-consequence assessment, and specialized field training. We operate four test facilities located at Kirtland AFB comprising 913+ acres. We also maintain an environmentally controlled detonation facility and an indoor ballistics test facility. Our team employs elite diagnostics, radiography and high-speed videography techniques and equipment to acquire critical test data. Additionally, we have multiple configurable training venues and training devices to provide related training.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
