Position Description
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy aligned with HMS's mission, prioritizing technological investments that enhance medical research and education leadership. Promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee the strategic management of IT operations, ensuring high service delivery standards. Align IT services with HMS’s long-term goals and facilitate operational efficiencies
  • Team Leadership and Development: Foster a high-performance culture by leading, coaching, and mentoring staff at all levels. Develop and support the growth of new leaders to excel and innovate. Align IT talents and resources to meet evolving technological challenges
  • Digital Transformation: Oversee and direct strategic initiatives focused on IT infrastructure modernization, cloud solution adoption, and process automation to streamline educational and research operations. Implement transformative technologies effectively through strategic partnerships with functional units
  • Technology in Medical Education: Oversee the integration of advanced technology in medical education, focusing on active learning classrooms, interactive tools, simulations, and AI-driven assessments. Collaborate with educational leaders to align technologies with pedagogical goals. Work closely with faculty and administrators to ensure AI tools are effectively incorporated
  • Research Technology Infrastructure: Direct the strategic enhancement of research technology infrastructure, focusing on essential components such as advanced storage systems, high-performance computing resources, and sophisticated networking architectures. Ensure technologies are scalable and capable of supporting state-of-the-art research and educational initiatives. Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to upgrade systems in alignment with advancements in biomedical technology
  • Research Computing Services and Strategy: Develop and manage a unified strategy aligned with cutting-edge scientific requirements. Enhance collaborations with research computing teams, departments, and external groups such as FAS Research Computing, the Kempner Institute, and the Massachusetts Green High-Performance Computing Center
  • AI Leadership: Advancing artificial intelligence technologies across administrative, medical education, and research domains. Develop and execute a forward-thinking AI strategy that enhances data-driven decision-making, optimizes operational processes, and accelerates research outcomes. Champion the adoption of AI tools and methodologies to revolutionize medical education through adaptive learning technologies and simulation models. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure AI initiatives align with HMS’s objectives and ethical standards
  • Business Partnerships: Cultivate strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including Preclinical Chairs, Deans, Executive Directors, Faculty Leaders, members of the senior HMS administrative leadership team, and colleagues within Harvard’s central IT units. Focus on aligning IT services to support academic, administrative, and research functions. Act as HMS’s representative on the Harvard CIO Council, leveraging relationships to influence and implement university-wide technology initiatives that benefit HMS and the Harvard community. Ensure seamless integration of IT strategies with the overarching goals of HMS through active participation and collaboration with the senior administrative leadership team
  • Compliance and Security: Direct the CISO to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements, implementing robust security controls and continuous monitoring processes to protect HMS’s information systems. Oversee strategies that maintain the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive and regulated data, safeguarding technological assets from internal and external threats. Develop and enforce policies that support rigorous data security practices
Basic Qualifications
  • Master’s or other advanced degree in Science, Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
  • At least 10 years of increasing responsibilities in technology leadership roles, with experience in an academic or research-intensive environment
  • Expertise in developing and overseeing research computing services and strategies, including experience with high-performance computing (HPC) systems, learning management systems, and secure data environments
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Outstanding leadership qualities, capable of developing and mentoring teams and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and optimize IT infrastructure teams and services, enhancing technology, staff skills, and service delivery
  • Strong experience establishing and maintaining strategic engagement with various stakeholders, including faculty, department administrators, and pre-clinical chairs
  • Extensive experience building and leading diverse teams through organizational changes and technological upgrades
  • Demonstrated success in fostering partnerships across organizational boundaries, enhancing collaboration and strategic alignment with internal and external partners, including other universities and research institutions
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale technology transformations, including the strategic vision and implementation of research data storage infrastructures and migration projects involving substantial data volumes
  • Experience with compliance and regulatory requirements, particularly in data security and privacy within a research or academic setting
  • A demonstrated track record of advancing a diverse and inclusive community
