Job Description

The robotics and remote systems program (R&RS) at Applied Materials division at Argonne National Laboratory is carrying out Research and Development (R&D) on robotic automations for various applications in unstructured environments and manufacturing. In support of the programs, R&RS is seeking to hire a pre-doctoral appointee to work on the development of robotic digital platforms which enable hardware-in-the-loop robotic simulation. The successful candidate will be involved in collaboration with the R&RS team for the research and development of a robotic digital twin system for various use cases in nuclear and industrial applications. 

The candidate will participate in all phases of the development including software frameworks, digital mockups, and various application platforms of robotic digital twin platforms for various projects and applications:

  • Development of Digital mockups of the spent nuclear fuel cask handling and transfer facility (CHTF) for DOE-NE Integrated Waste Management Program.

  • Development of integrated robotic operation platforms for the mobile robotic hot cell / glovebox system for DOE-EM Technology Development Office.

  • Implementation of Motion/Task planning capabilities for robotic applications.

  • Implementation of enhanced remote operation methods with virtual fixtures and shared control for robotic repair platform for Hanford Tank Farm facility.

  • Conversion of the robotic digital twin framework from ROS 1 to ROS 2 base.

  • Development and maintenance of robotic digital twin software repository.

  • 3D CAD design of the application environments including robotic systems and applications.

  • 3D virtual-reality simulator.

  • Multi-modal augmented-reality (AR) operator interface.

  • Robotic control and operation system development.

  • System integration with robotic hardware sensing and control based on robot operating system (ROS).

  • Development and maintenance of software system repository.

  • Design and implementation of robotics system concepts.

Position Requirements

  • The successful candidates are expected to have strong capabilities in software development and experiences to independently carry out telerobotics, intelligent robotics, and mixed-reality system development.

  • Master’s degree in robotics and artificial intelligence.

  • Formal training in computer science and experience in robotics and AI.

  • Capability in operating system programming and maintenance.

  • Experience in robotic application development based on robot operating system (ROS).

  • Experience with 3D VR and AR system development based on Unity, IssacSim, and Onmiverse.

  • Experience with systems integration with 3D sensing and display in VR/AR devices.

  • Experience in implementation of robotic workflow automation program.
