Job Description

The Strategy and Innovation Director will lead DIS strategic planning, business development, institutional investment, and feedback and improvement programs. The Director will develop and implement a multi-year strategy to maximize impact and fuel growth. Working collaboratively, the Director will develop DIS and S3 priorities that align to those identified in the Divisional, Directorate, and Laboratory strategic plans. The Director will drive forward the implementation of targeted actions to achieve priorities and integrate Divisional capabilities with other Divisions, Directorates, and Laboratories to increase impact with current and new sponsors. They will support strategy implementation and the delivery of outcomes that include sponsor funding for research in support of strategic priorities and S&T impact consistent with Laboratory and sponsor objectives. They will oversee strategic innovation portfolio and lead efforts to support critical lab priority areas (e.g., artificial intelligence, futures, etc.).


 

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of relevant technology development/management experience with a demonstrated track record of strategy development with resulting impact/outcomes.

  • Knowledge of national, homeland, and global security mission areas and doctrine to include prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery focus areas.

  • Experience in developing and implementing strategies to maximize impact and growth.

  • Leadership and management skills to support project/program managers with programmatic risk mitigation and issue resolution, and ensure the team delivers quality results to sponsors.

  • Degree in a scientific, engineering, technical or business related field.  Advanced degree preferred.

  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams including scientists and engineers.

  • Knowledge of strategic planning concepts and frameworks, business issues and concepts, research methodology, general management and financial analysis.

  • Creative strategic thinker with the ability to advise and influence various levels of management and scientific staff.

  • Very strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Problem solving and negotiation skills.

  • Strong team player that understands how to work in a complex, non-hierarchical environment with multiple important stakeholders.

  • Ability to balance multiple simultaneous projects in different technical disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of Argonne`s strategic priorities, research portfolios and technical capabilities.

  • Knowledge of the energy sector and the national security mission space.

  • Knowledge of US Department of Energy (DOE) and Federal funding agencies.

  • Ability to develop relationships across the Laboratory and with DOE.
