Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Biological Sciences Research Technician 2: Port Orford Field Station Operations Assistant position for the Marine Studies Initiative at Oregon State University (OSU). This position will be located at Port Orford. This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 2 years from the appointment begin date.

This position is based at Oregon State University’s Port Orford Field Station and supports year-round station operations and field work. This position assists the Station Manager with all aspects of operations: laboratories, classroom, offices, housing, education, outreach, field work and SCUBA diving air fill station, with a focus on participant safety and risk management. Field work includes on-water and in-water activities aboard small, motorized vessels and paddle craft, as well as support for snorkel and SCUBA diving activities. Provides administrative support to the Station Manager to ensure appropriate record-keeping and maintenance of required documentation.

The person in this position will be expected to obtain and maintain the following certifications as a part of their position:
AAUS Scientific Diver Certification (must obtain within 12 months of the start date of the position)
Certification in Basic Life Support (must obtain within 3 months of the start date of the position)
Professional SCUBA Inspectors (PSI) Fill Station Operator certification (training provided)

What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

What You Will Need
Two years of college-level courses in biological sciences or similar field and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Additional required qualifications

Demonstrated experience and/or interest in rural marine field station operations, projects, and activities, including risk management, facilities operations, and coordination of maintenance and upkeep.
Two years’ experience in at-sea marine environments, including motorized small boats and paddle craft.
AAUS Scientific Diver Certification (or ability to obtain certification within 12 months of accepting position).
Experience with SCUBA facilities and dive operations
Certification in Basic Life Support (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire)
Demonstrated experience in the performance of administrative duties related to payment of invoices, invoicing of user fees, and related activities.
Familiarity with typical office and presentation software such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Adobe, and cloud-based file sharing programs such as One Drive, Box, and Google Drive.
Strong work ethic, be able to work independently and as part of a team and be detail-oriented.
Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
Experience working in rural temperate marine and coastal environments.
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field
Certified small motorboat operator (or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of accepting position) For example, from Scientific Boating Safety Association (SBSA), Motorboat Operators Training Course (MOTC)
American Canoe Association (or equivalent) paddle craft certification
Professional SCUBA Inspectors (PSI) Fill Station Operator certification (FSO) Recreational dive leadership certification (Divemaster, Instructor)
Current Wilderness First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder Certification
Biological lab experience
Familiarity with Port Orford, Southern coastal Oregon, and surrounding community.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position requires driving in and around Port Orford, Oregon, and occasional longer trips along the Oregon coast. Work conditions are a combination of office and field environments, including periods at sea aboard small, motorized boats and paddle craft. Schedule includes regular hours on-Station, and non-standard hours as assigned during field work activities, possibly including weekends. Ability to lift/carry ~40lbs and effectively work in cold/wet outdoor conditions.
