Job Description

The Nuclear, Waste and Site Services Division of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is seeking an experienced Machining and Fabrication Superintendent to support the Custom Manufacturing Services (Central Shops) department.

The Superintendent Machining and Fabrication conducts the following activities as: assigning and scheduling daily work to a group of journeyman machinists; overseeing work-in-progress ensuring compliance with Laboratory and departmental policies, procedures, safety requirements, customer specifications and work control documents. Inspects completed work to ensure quality and timeliness. Initiates purchasing actions for materials, tooling and equipment needed to execute machining and industrial jobs. Monitors equipment needs for preventive maintenance and requests work orders for same. Provides technical support to others by preparing machining work estimates, work processes and sequencing. Participates in weekly coordination meetings with staff to schedule and prioritize work tasks.

As a supervisor, authorizes direct reports to use specific machine tools based on observations of competency for use; approves employee safety training curricula; interviews and evaluates candidates for open machining positions;  participates in development of and acts as mentor/supervisor to machinist apprentices in the apprenticeship program; prepares annual performance appraisals for direct reports; approves daily payroll for direct reports; coordinates overtime shifts and authorizes premium pay for employees conducting work outside their job classification. As needed for specific jobs, coordinates work with other groups or crafts for shops operations, equipment, or plant facilities and gathers and provides information regarding work incidents to immediate supervisor. Has operational responsibility for traditional machine shop operations. May act for the Department Manager in their absence.

Position Requirements

Associates degree or Technical School and 9+ years experience, or equivalent, as a machine shop supervisor or in a lead position in a machine shop environment.

  • Comprehensive experience in the field of work being supervised (manual and CNC machining operations).
  • Comprehensive experience overseeing the work of others or working on projects machining and fabricating with aluminum, stainless steel, steel and copper.
  • Considerable experience using or leading or directing others who use computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software such as MasterCAM, AutoDesk Fusion, Solidworks CAM and others.
  • Considerable experience programming or leading or directing others who program CNC machine tools with G-code.
  • Considerable experience selecting and purchasing raw materials from various vendors with an online presence or by individual quote.
  • Good experience supervising individual machinists and operators, or leading teams of individual machinists and operators to complete manufacturing tasks.
  • Good skills in oral and written communications to direct and interpret work instructions to employees.
  • Good skill in performing or selecting applicable training activities, decision making, workload assessment, and initial response to staff issues or conflicts.
  • Good experience using machine shop focused ERP software such as ProShop ERP, JobBoss, Fulcrum and others to estimate, schedule and process manufacturing work.
  • Good experience interacting with customers, responding to their requests for service and translating requests into mutually acceptable work scope.
  • Good experience performing manufacturing work at remote locations, i.e., outside the shop environs, paying particular attention to safety protocols required in sensitive locations – hospitals, research laboratories, or pharmaceuticals.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract.
  • This position will require an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois five days per week. 

Preferred

  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Experience overseeing or performing welding and brazing work, sheet metal fabrication and other machine shop related tasks.
  • Has experience overseeing the work of others or working on projects machining and fabricating less common materials such as G-10, PEEK, lead, ceramics, niobium, tungsten, titanium among others.
