Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is looking for a Lead Independent Auditor to join our team! We are seeking experience in scheduling, planning, performing, and reporting independent assessments within one or multiple areas of expertise and in accordance with Argonne policies/procedures. In this capacity, you will serve as primary support for the independent assessment of Argonne programs, systems, processes and work activities for adequacy and compliance with Argonne policies and procedures, as well as regulatory and contractual requirements. You will also provide support for the development and effective implementation of the Independent Assessment, Surveillance, and other self-assessment programs.

In this role, you will be part of Argonne’s Quality, Work Planning and Analysis (QWPA) team.  Argonne and the QWPA management team are advocates for strong cross-training and development programs.  As such, you will also work on assignments and teams related to requirements, documents, risk, assessments, event analysis, issues management, lessons learned, metrics, and work planning and control.

Key responsibilities:

  • Apply methodologies and approaches and skill in preparing assessment plans, developing assessment criteria, coordinating logistics, preparing assessment reports, and briefing management on assessment results.

  • Lead independent audits and interpret requirements and standards within specific area of expertise.

  • Assemble audit team members and direct team members in programmatic independent assessments.

  • Interpret regulations and assess means of meeting requirements in a diverse operational and research environment.

  • Execute the audit and issues/corrective action management database to manage the audit to closure.

  • Communicate with senior management on compliance issues, safety, and security performance issues at Argonne and elsewhere in the DOE complex.

  • Perform independent and up to four annual Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) audits and surveillance.

  • Multiple-concurrent assessments as team lead, team member and/or independent auditor and to meet goals and deadlines of each. 

Position Requirements

  • Experience with all levels of personnel and regulatory agencies, including building and leading effective working relationships and diverse teams across Argonne National Laboratory.

  • Effective verbal/written communication skills with the ability to conceptualize, document, and communicate major elements of regulatory compliance with both technical and non-technical personnel in a clear and understandable way. This can include regulatory compliance in engineering, technical and science-related areas.

  • Strong hands-on and logical problem-solving skills.

  • Self-starter with strong decision-making skills.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

  • Experience and training as an auditor.

  • Experience and training as a certified NQA-1 auditor is preferred.

  • To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. 

This position can be hired at one of two levels, and the requirements for each are as follows:

  • PT3: Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent

  • PT4: Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 4+ years of experience, or equivalent
