What Your Job Will Be Like: Are you passionate about national security and dream of leading a dynamic team to explore innovative solutions to some of the nation’s most challenging problems? We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Manager to lead our Computational Science and Analysis (CSA) Group. The group provides a focal point for computational simulation in the Center and provides an interface to our New Mexico colleagues for our continued leadership and contributions in this key domain. The group consists of four departments that conduct high-impact research and development in computational engineering sciences, multi-physics modeling and simulation, high performance computing, and scalable/novel computing technologies to impact multiple core programs: Nuclear Deterrence, Energy and Homeland Security, and other national security applications. You will lead and manage program interfaces, strategy development and implementation, and manage the effective execution and delivery on a diverse portfolio of work. You will manage key interfaces to deliver to ND programs in partnership with other S&T organizations. Specifically, you will interface with the W87-1 and W80-4 to ensure delivery of modeling and simulation results to these programs. The selected candidate will also lead the Advanced Simulation & Computing (ASC) Verification & Validation (V&V) program. The group’s activities are strongly linked to organizations across the laboratory in both Livermore and Albuquerque including engineering science, computing, and application specific centers, which necessitates solid relationship building with leadership in those centers as well as with the rest of the center (Computation and Analysis for National Security Center- ORG 8700). On any given day, you may be called on to: + Team across the Labs with key Center Directors and their leadership teams to develop Modeling and Simulation and Computational strategies to impact current and future ND missions + Establish, maintain, and strengthening partnerships with engineering sciences, radiation sciences, and computing R&D organizations across the Labs (e.g. Centers 1300, 1400, 1500, 8300, 9300), with other national laboratories, as well as with internal and external customers + Engage with key internal partners to deliver modeling and simulation results to W80-4 and W87-1 programs + Develop the strategy, interface with NNSA ASC Program, and deliver on commitments for the ASC V&V program in partnership with the broader ASC Program Elements + Support the development of Division 8000 capabilities strategies by engaging with ND partners across to understand current and future needs + Craft and execute workforce development plans including recruiting, hiring, retention, career development and performance assessment for multiple managers and staff, and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills from experienced to earlier career staff + Provide leadership for the group and be accountable for negotiated execution and desired outcomes + Foster a culture of inclusion and take an active leadership role in modeling and growing values in diversity, equality, and inclusion + Mentor and provide professional development to the managers and staff on your team + Work with your management team to anticipate and resolve operational, personnel, safety or security issues + Engage technically across the center and division to understand and represent the work as appropriate + Meet with key customers and other partners, locally or at remote locations to maintain and build relationships and programs The work location for this position is in Livermore, California. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at least 50% of the time. Qualifications We Require: + An advanced degree (MS) in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or related technical field plus 6 years related experience + Five or more years demonstrated leadership and/or managerial experience + Active DOE Q level security clearance (or equivalent) required to start + This position will require regular travel to NM, Washington D.C., and other locations in support of programmatic and scientific objectives and partnership development Qualifications We Desire: + PhD in engineering, computer science, or mathematics + Experience managing basic R&D and transitioning research to meet mission needs + Experience with program management involving sensitive information such as national security programs and classified information + Demonstrated ability to integrate a diverse workforce while building an inclusive, collaborative environment + Experience working with NNSA Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) mission space and/or ND mission + Professional-level interactions with technical societies, conferences, and academic institutions + Demonstrated history of external technical publications, presentations, and leadership + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships and partnerships among peers, staff, management, and customers + Proven ability to develop and motivate employees, handle personnel issues and resolve conflict in a positive manner + Proven experience leading high performing teams, creating a positive and high-trust teaming environment About Our Team: Center 8700, Computation and Analysis for National Security, anticipates and reduces national security risks through developing and applying cross-domain computational and analytical capabilities. Our work spans foundational research to development to application with deployment and engineering missions shaping our expertise. The Center stewards’ capabilities in engineering sciences, codes, models, data analytics, computing, information, and mathematical sciences, and agile component and systems design, and cyber and intelligence science.
