Job Description

The Senior Research Technologist will have extensive experience in flow cytometry, including hands on use of cytometers (sorters and analyzers), designing, and troubleshooting cytometry experiments, use of cytometry software and circuitry/fluidics, and theoretical optical physics of cytometry instrumentations.

Under supervision of the Scientific Director and collaboration with the Flow Core Manager, this individual will help oversee the day-to-day operation of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance of the cytometry instrumentations housed in the Flow Cytometry Suites.

This includes working with core personnel to implement standard operating procedures in:

(a) training self-users on the use/maintenance of instruments,

(b) providing user scheduling,

(c) ascertaining user compliance on job requests,

(d) overseeing core staff in providing efficient and collegial service to researchers,

(e) overseeing overall safety within the suites,

(f) working with the University of Pittsburgh IT in maintaining network access and maintenance of the core’s electronic folder,

(g) working with service contractors for smooth scheduling of maintenance service and as needed, provision by said contractors of urgent service, and

(h) prompt billing of service provided to clients.

The Senior Research Technologist must be able to interact collegially with users of the facilities (postdocs, technicians, students, PI's) to assist in design on cytometry projects thru the introduction of the latest technology available. The incumbent must be knowledgeable on the use of cytometry software and provide training to clients on the use of such software. This person must work with core personnel on accurate documentation (client job requests, billing, etc.) for the facility.

Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Hands-on experience with the operations of cell sorters and analyzers is a must. They must be very knowledgeable on techniques, including, but not limited to, the employment of signal compensation matrixes and equipment calibrators, have the ability to distinguish between noise and true cytometry signals, and have a working knowledge of sophisticated laboratory equipment, such as a flow cytometer or digitalized fluorescent microscopy equipment.

Must have working knowledge of the federal and university guidelines and regulations BSL research categories, laboratory biosafety, mammalian specimen, and human subjects regulatory compliance.

This position is located at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in Lawrenceville.

PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment.

Also, a current TB test will be required as a condition of employment.

Master’s degree in the Life Sciences with over 3 years of experience or Bachelor's degree with 7 years experience with flow cytometry instrumentation. Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
