Job Description

Argonne’s Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) Division seeks applicants for a Vocational Program Manager to support a national battery workforce development program that will advance U.S. battery technology leadership through scientific R&D, STEM education and workforce development. The selected candidate will draw from their engineering experience in electrification and advanced batteries to perform experimental work in partnership with TAPS research organizations that will be deployed into the battery workforce programming.

The Vocational Program Manager will utilize their engineering, technical and instructional skills to plan, coordinate, and execute vocational collaboration and learning experiences within a comprehensive battery workforce development program, preparing high school graduates, hourly workers, and transitional and vocational workers for a range of high-demand positions throughout the battery supply chain. This role will utilize their engineering and technical background in advanced batteries and electric vehicles to develop comprehensive, career-connected educational courses and stackable micro-credential training for in-demand skills, delivered through an online learning management system (LMS), and develop community relationships that lead to immersive internships and impactful experiential learning experiences for vocational students.

The Vocational Program Manager will also serve as a key technical mentor to guide vocational student participation in these workforce programs, including emphasis on recruitment, retention and matriculation of women and underrepresented minorities into STEM careers as well as a diverse set of workers for future clean energy and mobility positions. The Vocational Program Manager will also establish Regional Workforce Training hubs, facilitating collaboration between internal engineering and project staff with external project sponsors and other government, industry, and academic stakeholders to scale the regional workforce efforts across North America.

The selected candidate will explore through a technical lens existing industry training curriculum, content design and delivery methodologies, and evaluate effectiveness and connect participants to employers and careers. Applying analytical thinking, they will use their technical expertise to modify and tailor course content as necessary throughout the project lifespan.

The Vocational Programs Coordinator will also provide engineering and technical support for a three-year student Battery Workforce competition to design, build and integrate advanced battery packs into a production vehicle, taking on the role of facilitating vocational/university partnerships, mentoring students, scoring and judging student deliverables and serving as a key Argonne representative on external steering committees.
