Job Description

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to mainly conduct fundamental research in the field of battery technology development. The Postdoctoral Appointee will plan and conduct research on battery material synthesis and characterization, including electrochemical, chemical and structural characterization and electrode optimization. The ideal candidate should be familiar with fundamental electrochemistry and different energy storage technologies including rechargeable monovalent (lithium and sodium) batteries and various battery reaction mechanism such as intercalation and conversion.

The candidate should be able to analyze data, prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, present papers at scientific meetings, and prepare reports and presentations/papers for group meetings. The candidate will carry out innovative and hands-on independent laboratory work and collaboration across groups. The successful candidate will join a diverse team of ANL researchers and work closely with universities and other national laboratories. This position is open immediately and is based on renewable yearly contract.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry/electrochemistry, or related scientific background with 0 to 3 years of experience or equivalent

  • Knowledge in lithium-ion battery electrochemistry and their battery components

  • Hands-on experience of battery material synthesis (solid-state, wet chemistry, mechano-chemical) and characterization (SEM, TGA, BET, XRD, Rietveld refinement, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, etc.)

  • Skill in electrochemical characterization of batteries including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and common potentiostatic and galvanostatic methods, etc.; coin cell, Swagelok cell, and three-electrode cell and familiarity with Maccor or other equivalent testing systems

  • Skilled in safely handling air/moisture-sensitive chemicals

  • Plus with experiences of in situ/operando/ex situ synchrotron-based X-ray techniques (XRD, XAS, cell design)

  • Considerable skill in written and oral communication
