Job Description

Participates in training activities as assigned, attends courses held on or off site and maintains passing grades on written or oral examinations; under the direction of a Foreman, works with Waste Management Mechanics or works alone as training and knowledge progresses. Assigned duties include preparation of hazardous chemicals and radioactive wastes for storage and shipment; removal of asbestos from facilities; cleanup and decontamination work; post operational cleanup, including disassembly, cleanup and reassembly of equipment, replacement of radioactive filters, etc.; operation of liquid processing equipment for absorption, evaporation, filtration, etc.  Maintains detailed records as required and performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.  This job description documents the general nature of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Position Requirements

Waste Mechanic Trainee (WMT) is an entry-level position within the Waste Management Department at Argonne National Laboratory. A WMT will enter a comprehensive training program (2-3 years), which has the goal of getting the WMT familiar with Waste Management’s job functions, policies, procedures, forms, and checklists. Under the direction of their supervisor or Journeyman Waste Mechanic, the WMT will learn how to prepare hazardous chemicals and radioactive wastes for treatment, storage and shipment, asbestos remediation, spill cleanup, radioactive decontamination, replacement of radioactive HEPA filters, post operational cleanup, or other required duties as assigned by the Foreman. A successful candidate must be self-motivated, willing to learn, team oriented, willing to follow directions, work safely, compliantly, and efficiently.


Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in the use of hand and power tools
  • Working knowledge of job-related use of computers
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Willing to work overtime (>40 hours per week)
