Job Description

The Nuclear Safety Basis Analyst is responsible for performing and reviewing nuclear safety evaluations of structures, systems, and components; documents; and operations in and/or affecting Argonne’s nuclear and radiological facilities. Such evaluations include documented safety analyses, technical safety requirements, unreviewed safety question evaluations, and supporting documentation.  Performance of hazards and risk assessments is required in support of these evaluations. The Nuclear Safety Basis Analyst also serves as a subject matter expert for the division`s Safety Basis Group, providing ongoing safety basis implementation and interpretation support to facility, division, and project management staff. All activities are conducted in full compliance with applicable DOE Orders and Standards, as well as Argonne National Laboratory requirements, pertaining to nuclear facility operations and integrated safety management.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and 4+ (or 6+) years’ work experience, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of DOE requirements, guides, and standards for the preparation and maintenance of the safety basis for nuclear facilities, including, but not limited to, documented safety analyses, technical safety requirements, and the unreviewed safety question process. **Knowledge of/experience with the equivalent NRC documents/processes (e.g., UFSARs, technical specifications, 10 CFR 50.59 process) may be substituted.**
  • Ability to effectively apply analytical approaches and techniques used in safety evaluations to multiple facilities and operations; interpret and integrate results into safety basis documents; and provide oral and written communication of results to stakeholders within and across organizational lines.
  • Knowledge of nuclear safety standards and practices; use and control of radiological materials.
  • Ability to employ analytical methods for hazards and risk assessment, failure analysis, and radiological and chemical release consequence evaluation.
  • Ability to work successfully within a small (< 10 personnel) group environment and with limited technical direction (once qualified).

Preferred qualifications

  • Knowledge of nuclear accident phenomenology; experimental tools and techniques; and nuclear criticality safety.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT3 or PT4) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:

  • PT3 Level: Bachelor’s and 4+ years of experience or equivalent.
  • PT4 Level: Bachelor’s and 6+ years of experience or equivalent.
