Job Description

An Energy and Environmental Analyst position is now open for candidates with expertise and experience in technoeconomic analysis (TEA), or environmental and policy analysis of various energy systems. The candidate will possess good understanding of state, national, and global policy environments with respect to fuel and chemicals production safety and regulatory requirements. The candidate will possess system analysis including process modeling, technoeconomic analysis (TEA), environmental life cycle analysis (LCA) and regional analysis.

The candidate will extract energy and emissions data associated with fuel and chemical production technologies from U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) database, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency database (e.g., GHGRP, NEI), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management database (GOADS/OCS AQS), field data, process simulations, industry reports, the technical literature, and from interactions with other national laboratories, academia, industry, and stakeholders. The candidate will work with researchers within the SAC to expand the GREET model with the new data to enhance and expand the model’s capability of assessing the life-cycle energy use and emissions associated with various transportation fuels and chemicals. Additionally, the candidate will conduct analysis to access energy, environmental, policy, and economic impacts of alternative fuels, vehicle technologies, freight modes, energy systems/technologies and mobility trends (e.g., travel, refueling and adoption behavior) from system to national level. Example project could include but not limited to identify optimal locations for charging infrastructure or hydrogen filling stations for light duty and heavy-duty vehicles, the likely buildout of those locations into networks, and the effect of that buildout on market penetration and energy infrastructure.

Position Requirements

  • Master’s degree.

  • Experience with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and alternative fuels likely to be used in transportation systems.

  • Skilled written and verbal communicator, including the ability to present complex information so that it is understandable to a broad audience.

  • Demonstrated well-developed problem-solving skills, systems thinking, quantitative, and critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity. Able to structure and formulate solutions to complex problems.

  • Knowledge in energy systems and/or critical materials and relevant issues.

  • Highly motivated and detail-oriented approach with the ability to work independently to deliver. Energized by working as part of a highly collaborative and productive team.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public policy with a focus on energy policy.

  • Knowledge of general operations and challenges in the energy production sector.

  • Experience with web page implementation.

  • Experience in decarbonization and sustainability analysis.

  • Desire and passion to work as a part of a team in a highly collaborative environment.

  • Familiarity with a wide range of data sources relevant for environmental and sustainability analysis, and the ability to identify topics and data sources and engage experts to conduct research.

  • Capable of identifying key features of complex systems/processes.
