Job Description:
Responsible for coordination of blood, bone marrow and other biological specimens and supplies per protocol requirements in the Biospecimen Repository Core Facility (BFCF). This includes pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, and ancillary studies for Industry-Sponsored, Cooperative Group and Investigator Initiated clinical trials.
The Biospecimen Repository Core Facility (BRCF) plays a vital role to support translational research by its ethical collection, storage, annotation, and distribution of high quality biospecimens, such as frozen solid tumors of varying histology and bodily fluids (blood, urine, ascites fluids).

The starting salary for this position will be between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range listed.

Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other science related area. Experience may substitute for degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience: Minimum 1-2 year lab assistance experience with demonstrated lab tech skills with blood samples.
Skills: Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Has a basic knowledge of the overall sections which comprise the laboratory and each section’s functions. Demonstrate competence in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills. Has a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
Preferred Qualifications:
Skills: Previous oncology experience. Previous experience in blood processing.
Job Duties Outlined:
Possess an in-depth knowledge of specimen collection, processing, and shipping requirements for protocols. Accurately obtain, process, and manage serial specimens (blood or other body fluids) obtained from patients.
Collaborate with Cancer Center laboratory and treatment area staff to secure and process specimens in a timely manner; collaborates with KU Hospital laboratory and pathology departments; collaborates with CTO staff and assists with obtaining and shipping blood specimens based on IATA/DOT guidelines.
Position is based at the main campus facility but occasionally will require travel to other sites to retrieve samples when necessary.
Recognize sources of error or inappropriate specimen collection and initiates corrective action when indicated. Assure the appropriate personnel have been contacted and the incident documented according to SOP’s.
​Participate in quality assurance/quality improvement activities related to specimen collection, specimen handling, processing, and shipping, as well as patient preparation and identification.
Respect the confidentiality of all patient sample information.
Accurately perform data entry if necessary, in both Hospital and Laboratory information systems according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures, as well as compliance requirements.
Ensure all requirements for specimen integrity have been met (positive patient identification, correct specimen collected, proper transport of sample has been employed, etc.).
Perform other duties as assigned.
