Maintain, repair, set-up, and operate complex technical systems, including but not limited to audio, lighting, rigging, staging, and scenery as needed for Emens Auditorium, Pruis Hall, Sursa Hall, Worthen Arena, East Mall Amphitheater and other University venues as assigned. Although involved in all facets of stage production, this position is focused predominantly in the area of sound design and operation for live events with special emphasis on providing high quality audio enhancement for varied events. Assist other auditorium staff in deployment of other technical systems.

Ball State University is seeking a dynamic audio technician committed to planning, executing and delivering exceptional sound reinforcement for a wide bandwidth of events, including national and international artists, professional performances, university convocations, and campus events as well as community functions at Emens Auditorium and other venues at our institution. This position will be involved in all facets of stage production including lighting, video projection, and rigging, yet the main mix of duties are dialed in to sound design and operation for live events and providing input regarding new systems acquisition. Regular hours frequently involve overtime, evenings and weekend shifts. Emens Auditorium is located in the heart of the Ball State University campus in Muncie, Indiana. The salary range for this position is up to $52,000.00 annually.

Job Function:

Minimum Education:

Associate's degree or equivalent in technical theatre, electronics technology, or related field.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor's degree in theatre production, music technology, electronics technology or related field.

Minimum Experience:

Over five through eight years of experience in audio reinforcement, technical theatre, stage crafts, or related field; previous experience with digital consoles (Digico & Soundcraft).

Preferred Experience:

Over eight years of experience in audio reinforcement, concert/theatre production, or related field; familiarity with digital processors(Lake, dbx, Crown).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate, deploy and maintain auditorium sound system; includes control surfaces, speakers, amplifiers, microphones, cabling, etc.; install hardware & software updates as required; determine necessary equipment for locally produced shows; work with touring productions to integrate systems and supplement house equipment or rental gear as required; mix audio for live productions and monitor as required.
  • Develop and design audio system upgrades for facilities supported by this department; research equipment options and make recommendations for acquisition.
  • Lead and direct stagehands i.e., carpenters and lighting crews, in completion of tasks.
  • Hang rigging points and other rigging equipment; utilize electric chain hoists to lift trusses, audio speakers, scenery pieces and other equipment.
  • Operate and maintain auditorium counterweight flyrail system; calculate weight requirements; integrate flying pieces (background drops, etc.) into stage flyspace.
  • Install symphony shell; set up, maintain, and tear down risers, stage platforms, and other stage equipment.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot and tear down video projection as required, assist presenters with integration of video content.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of environmental safety and other safety concerns.
  • Assume the responsibilities of the Auditorium Stage Manager in his/her absence as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
